Monthly Topic

May 02, 2011 22:32

Hey y'all! I know, i know. Passions are flowing. Bin Laden being dead and all, the previous Pope half-saint now, Kate & Wills becoming duke & dutchess of Cambridge (WTF does that even mean?) (not in that particular order), and Obama now being officially born in Hawaii. Wow. What a week. What a month, actually!

This is about the Monthly Topic that we all choose on the 1st Monday of each month, but first let me just remind everybody once more that, starting May 9, our fine comm here will be featured on the LJ Spotlight. That means that we'll meet some newcomers, most certainly. So i'm urging all the "old dogs" here to show some patience and restraint and make them feel comfy around here. Its not much. Just proceed as usual, etc. We all want some new guys bringing fresh ideas to discuss politics with, amirite? I'm sure nothing could go wrong, oh no, no way ;)

Now to the point. Here's what you chose for a Monthly Topic:

Political Satire in Fiction and the Media

That should be fun. Now what could possibly be controversial about satire? After all, its not serious, and... OH WAIT..... Duh. Oh well...

Some points that could be included (as if satire has been a definable thing, ever?)

- History of political satire; most notable persons.
- TV shows: political humor, infotainment.
- Stand-up comedy and politics.
- Political speech, free speech and political dissent.
- Satire in newspapers: columnists, cartoonists*.
- Political satire and parody in fiction literature.
- Movies with political satire, satirical documentaries.
- Satire in philosophy.
- Parody religions.
- News satire: fake news, humorous hoaxes and stunts.
- Satire under fire: scandals, legal action, suppression.
- Satirical prophecy: examples.
- Political colloquialisms, memes and catch-phrases.
- Satire on bumper-stickers, protest signs and other means of propaganda.

* Important note: You'll be able to post cartoons. BUT! There's always a "but". You'll have to add your personal analysis (see Rule #8). And no, just a couple of lines won't do. If it'll be a cartoon, better put it behind a cut, then explain the point you're making with it. You know, make it relevant, comprehensive and ultimately, discussable (sic?). Use your own words and imagination. I repeat: 1-2 lines of "Hey, look at this cartoon, it's so spot on, haha!" won't do, and you'd most likely be asked to expand on that. For those who are not happy with this requirement, i rather recommend that you stick to politicartoons , a comm explicitly for posting cartoons without necessarily adding anything more. Here we care about opinions. So make sure to give your opinion/analysis, or at least present the issue you want us to discuss in a sufficiently comprehensive way. Thank you in advance.

All that said, now here's the poll for the next month (June):

And finally, here's the place to announce yet another great news. Last week we said O, Hai to our new mod Bruce. Now i'm honoured to present to you... sealwhiskers! Its awesome to have a sea mammal on the team! Give high-five to our new overlord or you won't get any fishies! :D
