Today's a peculiarly Soviet/postSoviet holiday - the Old New Year. Basically, it came from the calendar shift in, if my memory serves me well, 1918, when Soviet Russia left Julian calendar for Gregorian (and I hope I'm not mixing those two up. I've a headache).
