1) The only way to make a good anti-hero is to murder their family. There are plenty of other ways to make a person cynical. Killing their family is just one of many. Can't we have them fired and their house burned down so they have to live on the streets with their family? Surely that would make someone just as bitter

The only thing I can think of for #3 is that in order for the nefarious SOBs to be able to pillage, plunder and otherwise rape the universe is for them to have all the super weapons and best tech - otherwise the good guys would have already squashed them.

That makes a lot of sense. My point is that say there are SOBs out there and what if they were squashed by the good guys with super awesome weapons. Why don't we run into the good guys? About the closest I can think of is SG-1 but then those aliens are rather nasty at times too. SO....doesn't fit the bill. Close Encounters maybe...

SG-1 did try to bring us a balance. The Nox were pretty good without being nasty but they preferred to stay uninvolved which kinda took way their 'good guy' status, sorta.
Did we ever get to meet a Furlong or find out what happened to them?
LOL And didn't the Ancient's turn out to be a gem of a race?

Yeah SG-1 doesn't have much of a good guy race. Even in Babylon 5 the ones you think are good don't turn out to be so good in the end.
