Andy and Caleb and I were driving back home from E. Peoria yesterday evening on 74 and saw fireworks off in the distance. Caleb shouted out lets go over there to watch them. So we tracked them down, they were having a display in Glen Oak Park. It was most of the way through already so we drove slowly and saw what we could, and talked about the ( Read more... )

CID look out, I'm typing too much again!!! PART ONE zencookie July 5 2007, 18:24:09 UTC
Oh dear!!! That just shot up a whole bunch of warning flags in my head. I suppose this might come as preachy from a non-parent, but in a meek defense, I have raised a lot of nieces and nephews, and I did have a terrible knife-wielding exhibitionist "rabid-esque" (yeah, I made that word up) 5-year-old brother when I was a pre-teenager, that Jess and Toni will tell you was worse than living with a Chuckie doll and Macaulay Culkin from “The Good Son” ranging to that kid from “Problem Child” on a good day, and I did baby-sit for poop-throwers and I did take child, adolescent and developmental psychology among others. Not super convincing, but you never met my brother. He’s scared away more baby-sitters than the Simpsons. Let me tell you, they just left with 4 hours until my parents got home or more ( ... )

Though I don't think a couple of spoilings are bad, especially on a single-parent-reared 5-year-old boy, I think you should watch Andy carefully to make sure he doesn't make a habit of buying his way into hearts and out of tears. For example, presents should be well placed and for good behavior, especially in these early stages of bonding. If Caleb enjoys the fireworks (without bawling), then Andy could get him fireworks. Then Caleb would associate the original good time and the replicated good time with Andy. This works in any case. If he liked Transformers (was he there?) then getting him a Transformers Happy Meal is a doubly good time. Then every time he plays with the toy he'll think of both good times with Andy and you. But getting him a Transformers Happy Meal because he bawled and screamed when "you couldn't go get ice cream after the movie because even though you drove over there, the ice cream store was closed" is not good, even though you'll be inclined to not disappoint, and you might want to try to get ice cream somewhere ( ... )

P.S. You're not becoming/didn't become cold to things as a single parent. Saying "No": That's just good parenting. And good budgeting!

For comparison, that was probably half as long as harry potter and the deathly hallows. Hahahaha. Okay, maybe the script for the first half hour of the movie. But anyways, you deserve a cookie!!! Or at least some kind of treat. Maybe a nap. I'm gonna take one, too.
