I just looked at lawn mower prices. If ever again I am in a position to be responsible for a yard, I will buy nanny goats. They can trim and fertilise the yard and I get milk in the bargain. Oooh, and cheese!
The whole American concept of lawns is absurd. It must have been started by royalty with lots of staff and money to squander. We take our land and plant it with something that has no productive value. We spend lots of time and effort reducing species diversity (fighting weeds). We apply chemicals (nutrients, herbicides, pesticides) that run off and damage our watersheds. We spend time grooming (mowing) this useless plant - or we pay someone else to - generally consuming non-renewable fossil fuels and spewing greenhouse gasses in the process. Some people even pay to have the clippings carted away too. (You pay to grow it, and then you pay to get rid of it?) Lawns compete for water resources that are scarce in some areas. And then there's the whole economy of the industry wasted to produce (and sell) the machinery and tools to perform these tasks.
