settle an argument

(These little settle-an-argument polls are not necessarily for Dreamwidth, by the way -- just, well, to settle an argument. *g* In this case, though, we're deciding between "rip out Snapshot functionality entirely" and "change Snapshots to being a logged-in-user viewing preference only and never let someone force you to see them if you don't want ( Read more... )

Thank you for the link!

My immediate response is "rip it out, burn it, and dance on its ashes." Which, uh, might be a tad excessive. *g*

That was mine, too. And Mark's. But on second thought ... I kinda hate the thought of just ripping them out entirely, in case they're someone else's "best thing since sliced bread", so my current way of thinking is, change it to a user-based viewing pref defaulted to fucking off that will allow people to enable them only for their account while logged in, if they want.

It's kind of six-of-one in terms of effort required, I think, but I still wanted to see if my gut instinct (that very few, but some people find them interesting/useful) was correct.

"defaulted to fucking off" is a standard to be applied at about 90% of all opportunities, and hard to go wrong with, IMO.

I waffle a great deal, because sometimes they're actually sort of interesting and useful, but sometimes they're an annoyance. I probably wouldn't miss them, but I haven't bothered turning them off despite being pretty sure that I can, in fact, turn off at least some of them.

When I'm on a fast connection, I kinda like them. If it's a slow computer or connection though, work of the devil. Soooo...

"change Snapshots to being a logged-in-user viewing preference only and never let someone force you to see them if you don't want to"

This sounds like a great compromise to me. I'm guessing that your poll's gonna be pretty bifurcated between "hell no" and "okay." I've only run into a few people who really like them.

I'm for the configurable option too.

On my work machine they used to crash the browser with 100% reliability - although that was a FF3 beta release, so I'm not entirely blaming the snapshots for that one. Still, they were involved :)

*points* What she said. I don't often surf on a slow connection these days (thank ghod!) but I reserve the right to hate them with a flaming purple passion should it happen.
