You know, I loved this episode bunches, but in a weird way I enjoyed some of the other characters reactions more than Kalinda's. I recognize that I'm probably in the minority here...because of course we actually got a good dose of Kalinda AND a smidgen of A/K to boot..but beyond that second phone convo with Alicia (which I did totally love), I thought that AP wasn't quite as convincing as I've seen her. Not that I'm really criticizing - I mean AP can do no wrong with this character and there were for sure some really nice moments (like right after she covered Will's body) - I just felt like in light of some really heavy hitting performances of the night, she wasn't necessarily the one that really moved me. Which is what I'm used to from her. I'm gonna blame JM for this because ARCHIE IS PROBABLY OUT OF PRACTICE

And of course I can't help but be a little teeny bit excited at the prospect of some sort of future Kalicia. Even if it's only in BC. 'Cause it was gettin' quiet up in here.
My worst fandom fear is not Kalicia being canon-dead, it's BC dying. Because with the former, I still have my imagination, but with the latter, I'm just blathering to myself like a crazy person and that's just sad.
Ok, watched! (Thanks for doing the post, randomizer. You should learn how to do the cut for next time though, you're going to get me in trouble with the spoiler police! :)) WAY TO BREAK MY SOUL, SHOW. Really, brilliantly done -- all the feelings had me riveted. You know who got me almost more than anyone else? David Lee. If that little troll has emotions, there is hope for the world

It *is* huge, isn't it? It's really the biggest A/K scene that we've had since everything crashed in season two, in its way. This is the ONLY scene in which Alicia was absolutely vulnerable and asked Kalinda to help her emotionally. It's amazing that something this big and packed with nuance could take place in a blink-and-you'd-miss-it phone conversation. I really love it.
But yeah to your other stuff--David Lee was great, Diane was great. Really a spot-on episode. I haven't felt this positive about the show in a long, long time.
Yes, this is the first time the Missus and I have watched it twice in a row since "Waiting for the Knock" and she's not even a Kalicia shipper, she just likes a great episode where she's not using the c word for Alicia every 30 seconds.
The second time through was funny though. Amongst every job possible that she's done in her life, working in a forensics lab and being an autopsy technician are included. Boy did I hear about HOW WRONG THE MORGUE was. At length. In detail. Also, she quite rightly pointed out that there was terrible makeup continuity on Will. He looked good and dead in hospital last week, and nice and alive in the morgue last night. Problematic. (Or good for anyone doing Zombie fic...)
Apart from just happy happy we got two phone calls (I've become *that* easy to please) I'm so excited to see so much Kalicia potential for the future and even if the Shenanigans rule is still in force, at least it's great for fanfic. I just hope we're in even such a vaguely good spot by hiatus so that we can have a rip-roaring ficathon where the Kalicia fic spins a happy future rather than having regretful reunions, missed connections etc

Gah, and because I'm so pleased with this I keep forgetting major stuff. I think it's a big effing deal about who Alicia turned to for comfort.
Peter imposed himself on her in a very obnoxious way and should have taken the very clear signal Alicia was sending to stay the hell away from her.
Grace offered platitudes that were completely meaningless to her mother's complex situation of grief. (I LOVED that scene BTW.)
And Cary was no more than a courtesy call. (That was as good a demonstration that as business partners they aren't yet Will and Diane as could be had.)
So her husband, child and business partner weren't who she needed.
She went "home" to LG and got some comfort from Diane, but Diane couldn't give her answers and Alicia didn't want to stay despite the offer.
Things I didn't like, besides voicemail!quest...Alicia and Grace's pointless God conversation. It struck me as weirdly out of place in the episode. Was it supposed to highlight Alicia's anguish? Grace's naivete? Is Grace's religion going to be important in the near future and we needed a reminder? I basically cringed through the whole scene. Conversely I loved that scene. I thought it served two important purposes
( ... )
Regarding the Grace/God conversation -The idea that they had a network main character NOT turn to God when someone close to her dies, NOT find comfort in the idea of heaven, is actually pretty amazing. Alicia is an atheist, even in at a time where she is desperate for answers, she is still an atheist. She is a loving person, with a strong moral compass, and yet values truth more than faith. I feel like that's a personality trait we normally find that in men (i.e. Men of science - doctors, chemists, etc.) on television, not women

Yes, yes yes! The Kalicia phone call WAS big. The only thing that stops me from feeling totally happy is that I remember the moment in Boom De Ya Da where they had the scene in the bedroom in which Kalinda apologizes. THAT seemed big, that seemed as if it was leading somewhere, but that only lead to icy silence for quite some time. We'll see! Why not be positive? If my heart is going to break eventually, might as well be happy now! Ugh, I know! The last time we were this excited was the hotel room scene and we (and by we I include honorary BCer Jace Lacob) all read it wrong as the beginning of a true thaw. When instead it was "Alicia realises it can never be the same

Maybe this is too obvious to say, but I'll say it anyway: whatever else is happening, and even if we never get any more Kalicia ever again, we're clearly meant to conclude that Alicia and Kalinda are actually pretty good friends. And *that* means that, whatever else, JM lost an important battle in her "it's just not realistic" crusade. And I say--yay and suck it!
Re: an obvious pointsweetjamieleeApril 1 2014, 19:37:59 UTC
We're NOT meant to conclude though that they've been talking all along, have we?? I'm still under the impression that they haven't talked since Alicia left for FA.
Re: an obvious pointrandomizerApril 1 2014, 19:45:57 UTC
I think that's weirdly ambiguous, but I tend to think that yeah, they haven't been talking. But I think it's also reasonable to infer that they're such soul mates etc. that pesky details like *communicating* don't matter. (Ok, that's my shipper conclusion, but I'm standing by it!)

Maybe you were just ruined by anticipation of Kalinda having something meaningful rather than the dross she's had all season until last week.
I actually liked that Archie played it so quietly. No great histrionics, she just went about obtaining what she needed from the situation as it stood.

The person she wanted comfort from was Kalinda.
