This is stupid

Good Lord.  Elizabeth got her cell phone taken up at school.  They say she won't get her phone back for 30days.  Not cool.  I have a call in now to the vice principal or whatever he is.  That school has more vice principals (5).... I hate this school system!  No she shouldn't have had the phone at school, according to her she wasn't using it, just ( Read more... )

Considering how much school violence there is these days, I would think the phone would be a safety item ( ... )

Yes there policy is off at school. I can understand and agree with taking it up but I think 30 days is excessive and overkill. In one thing I read online it was an end of the day, then end of the term, then suspension. The other policy I read online said 30 days. My problem is they had both-the first I found was the end of day policy; it wasn't until I talked to Ass. principal that she pointed me to the other.

Heck yeah! Girl power!!!

Yes this is a first offense and yes she is 18. My dad pays the bill. Yes. I argued, they didn't budge and I am not sure where to go from here.

Well, I suppose your dad could argue that since he pays the bill, they are withholding *his* property and insist they release the phone to him. As he is not a student at the school, they have no authority over his private property.

And I'm sure he would/will when he gets back- he's gone until the 26th

If it were me I would question the policy, specifically the length of time that it can be held, and hold them to that. If the policy states that they give it back at the end of the day or 3 days or whatever then they have to abide by it too. If it's something she does in fact NEED outside of school hours see if they will release it to you. Then you can take it before school and give it back after.

Nevermind, I just went and read their policy. It says the device must be turned OFF upon entering the building. To check the time it has to be on. I don't really think that's a good excuse anyway since all classrooms have a clock. It does sound like her first offense though since second offense comes with 2 days out of school suspension.

They have 2 completely different policies on-line and I still think 30 days is excessive. Even with it on, and prolly texting too, but I don't think 30 days is a punishment that fits the crime, I just don't know who to argue with.

This school system is run by a bunch of GOB morons!

That sucks, so they arent going to give it back to you??? What if she needs it after school or on the weekends. What is she was a "latch key" kid and needed it for an emergancy. It is scary to think they can take your stuff and not even a parent can get it back! What happened when you talked to the ass principle? Did they just say tough tootie?

Nope. She deserves to have it taken but the length of time is too much IMHO. Pretty much...her hands were tied, all that sorta bullshit.

danni's school takes the cell phones and keeps them until the END OF THE YEAR! last year, it was just for the quarter, but now, the whole year.

sucks.

I still think it's overkill. They don't want them to use them during school hours make them put them on the desk, then they will know who is using them and who isn't. It's just ridiculous! And end of year is way too far over the top.

I am not opposed to a consequence and yes I believe she should have had the phone taken-hell she shouldn't have had it at school in the first place but that's another argument. :)
I argued that I pay the bill and if they are using it they should pay the bill as it cannot be used by her. They claim it has been argued in court and the courts have upheld school board policy. I have no clue how true this is but in our county I wouldn't doubt it.
Technology has evolved while maturity, morality and ethics have devolved!
I hope that teacher wins, maybe then the parents of these kids would teach them not to do this.
I am not even sure she ever signed it, or myself for that matter-so many forms come home at the beginning of the and for each kid, I don't remember what I have signed. Although knowing Elizabeth she wouldn't have turned it in anyway. I'll have to look into it.
All of this is such a pain in the ass.
