I have never felt so bad about being Catholic since I was told I was going to hell in fourth grade because I was Catholic. Today it was different, today it was Death and Dying and the brilliant *read with dripping sarcasm* James Banks didn't know what purgatory was so Miss Jan asked me, the token Catholic at a Baptist college to explain it to a ( Read more... )

Why was this discussed in a class? What class, school? I have more questions but I'll wait for an answer. I can see why you would be upset. I get upset as well and deffesive because of my religion. Just because you and I are not the same religion doesn't make me or you better than the other. Without differences the world would be nothing. No one should have let that get that far, expecially your teacher. I'm sorry hun that you where treated like that and I wish I was there. Even though I am not Catholic I would have stuck up for you. Your beliefs are just that YOURS no one needs to judge unless they want to be judge for their beliefs. Hugs hun and hopefully you have a better day.

It was discussed in death and dying class, we discuss different customs and death rituals of different religions and countries. I go to a Southern-Baptist college-that doesn't help matters.
I agree, I have no problem with people of differnet religions, I never have, religious persocution makes no sense to me.
I don't blame Ms Jan, I don't think she expected it to go that far, and to her it was a lively discussion, I don't think she saw I was getting upset, she stopped it when Brandon started spouting, that's when she saw it as going overboard.
Thanks I appreciate that. That is what Ms. Jan said afterward, that we were all different religions and everyones beliefs were different and we all needed to respect each other, but some people had already closed there minds so it didn't really matter.
Thanks, I appreciate it. It really means a lot to me.

I got upset again typing it. Because Ms. Jan doesn't see things the same way most people do. She is very unique, that's what make her classes so interesting-she is the prof. who took us to the female impersonator show for Deviance class last summer. And I don't think she saw it as getting out of hand until Brandon started spouting scripture. I handled myself ok, it wasn't until I turned around and started taking notes again that I started crying. I don't blame Ms Jan, I don't think she expected it to go that far, and to her it was a lively discussion, I don't think she saw I was getting upset, she stopped it when Brandon started spouting, that's when she saw it as going overboard. People can be so self righteous when it comes to religion, it's maddening. I used to volunteer at a christian camp every summer and although it was titled a 'non denominational Christian camp', the leaders were all from the Baptist Church circle, and most of the other volunteers were, like me, from a Baptist church ( ... )

That is unfortunately true. Your story is a funny but sad reminder. Many Protestants don't belive Catholics are Christians, or that we believe in Jesus, or lots of other crazy things.

This is the first time I've really had any trouble, and this is my last semester. I was warned which professors to stay away from-because of closed mindedness. There are several other Catholics at school with me, and our priest is often on campus as a guest lecturer in several classes.

I don't blame Ms. Jan, she just saw it as a lively discussion, and didn't see me getting upset, I didn't cry until it was over, she stopped it when Brandon started spouting scripture. She probably stopped it at a good time.

Faith is just that, faith-belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. We all have our own degrees of faith.

Ok, now I must ask, how did you come across my LJ? I don't mind a new reader, I am just surprised. :D

You're on the 'Soapbox' page, which I'm also on, and I read through it every few days.

Closed minded people frustrate me. I believe there is more than one path, more than one way to believe. I was raised Catholic myself...but tend to believe on am more spiritual open-minded level that allows everyone to believ in there own way. I don't think fighting over religion and beliefs is anything God would want.

I'm sorry you had to go through that.

*hugs*

You and me both. I find that most Catholics, or at least that I know, feel that there is more than one path a person can take. Do you still practice? I do but not as often as I should. :)
I feel like I was raised to be open minded to other religions and find out as much as I could about other peoples faiths and never judge anyone for any reason. I just don't find that I am extended the same courtesy, especially in this area.

Thank you. It has never happened before and I hope it doesn't happen again.
