Presidential Debate #1

Did you guys see the Presidential Debate? What were your thoughts? I don't think there was a clear winner in this one. I'm glad to see that Obama could hold his own ... some people were worried about that ( Read more... )

I was watching the Yankees spank the Red Sox until the rain delay, and since I know who I'm voting for I'm not going to spend too much energy on the debates (though if nothing is on against the next one, I'll watch it).

I'm not really sure how it's possible to get $9 trillion in debt. That's sickening.

McCain himself is annoying. He always looks so washed out, like he has no pigment in his skin at all. Not sure what's up with that, unless it's to make Obama look that much darker. (suspicious much? *Me*?)

Sorry, I usually don't like when people respond to my posts where I ask questions and people comment by saying they have no experience with which to answer my question, but I'll assume you know my vote is going to Obama. :)

That makes sense. I always knew who I was voting for but I'm into this stuff. What can I say? I'm a poli sci major. LOL!

The last $6 trillion was over the past 8 years. Yes, it's disgusting.

You? Suspicious? *gasp* ;) Really, though, McCain is very annoying.

Yay for fellow Obama supporters! I appreciate the honesty. There are so many people who spurt out opinions without having any facts to back them up and I can always count you on to be informed on whatever you're talking about. :D

Yeah, as a poli sci major, this is pretty much mandatory viewing for you. When I was taking AP Government in high school, it was 2000, and our teacher (Mr. Right Wing Conservative Reagan Worshipper) made us watch the debates and other political shows (omg so boring). But watching the first debate with Gore/Bush made it so I understood the Saturday Night Live parody of it, which is still one of my most favorite sketches.

Even if I knew who else was in the running as a third party candidate, I could never give them my vote. Not when we need to get the GOP out of the White House. Every vote counts. Sorta. It's a complicated process, as you know.

I can always count you on to be informed on whatever you're talking about.Thanks. I try to make it clear when I'm expressing an opinion, or at least know what I'm talking about. Because it infuriates me when people blather on about stuff and they don't know what they're talking about. When they're like, "That movie sucks," and when you ask them if they've seen it, they say they read ( ... )

Yeah, otherwise I'll come off looking like an idiot in classes. They'll be "what are you doing here?" But I was interested to see what they will say.

SNL is so much fun! I loved the Tina Fey as Palin one! :)

Exactly ... every vote very much counts so I would never vote for a third party either. Yeah, it's a very complicated process but one thing I'm certain of is that the Republicans can't have another 4 years.

Because it infuriates me when people blather on about stuff and they don't know what they're talking about.

So much YES! I hear so many people making statements about both candidates and be completely wrong on their policies. I hate when people talk for the sake of talking.

I totally understand.

It ticks me off that McCain is so unbelievably arrogant that he cannot even LOOK at Obama. For 97 freaking minutes he made a point NOT to make eye contact. What kind of disrespectful prick is this guy? You know, before tonight I had no intention of voting for McCain but at least I RESPECTED him. A lot. Now, I can't stand the sight of him. Just like I can't stand the sight of that floozy VP he picked. UGH. I think Obama was a clear winner just for the simple fact that McCain came across as such a jackass. They even commented about it on NBC so I know I'm not the only one who noticed it. Obama was always looking over at McCain, trying to be gracious, but McCain only looked at Obama ONCE during the entire debate, and it was for less than a second. What an ass. That'll be the day I debate with someone for an hour and a half without even having the courtesy to LOOK at them. /end rant

THANK YOU! That was really annoying to me! I didn't have any problems with McCain as a person. I thought his taste sucked, as far as picking VPs but after his appearance on Leno, I respected him too. I thought he was funny. But he's an ASS! Like you said, if you debate with someone, you look at them!

They even commented about it on NBC so I know I'm not the only one who noticed it.

Dude, everyone noticed it. And it made me angry. >:(

First of all, can I thank you for posting on LJ in a mature and even fashion? I find it extremely respectable when someone can state their own personal leanings without condescending the other side.

I thought the debate was pretty balanced. I felt both had some weak moments and some equally strong moments. I don't think there was a clear winner here. I look forward to the debates down the road.

For the record, I'm an Independent and could swing either way.

Well, I like hearing both sides of the debate and I don't want to isolate anyone. If you look above, I did go on a little rant but there were some issues that pissed me off, especially the McCain refusing to look at Obama.

It was balanced and I agree with you on that they both have their weak and strong moments. No clear winner here but I was listening to CNN and like they said, it will make the decision harder.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'd be interested to see your thought process as the debates go on. :D

I typically don't enter into conversations online about politics or religion because I feel they are far too volatile subjects, and I don't wish to lose friends over things I am quite sure neither of us will change our minds on. However, I will say that I did watch the debate, and as I predicted both had their strong points, and both had things that could be picked apart. Being an Obama supporter I personally did not like how he kept saying McCain was right (even though I know what he was meaning). It was sort of funny to me that a lot of people predicted that Obama would be the one who came off snide due to his superiority in education, however, I thought it was McCain with his snorts and eye rolls and smirks that came off far more hostile and rude. Of course though, I am biased. Just saying that after the debate, my mind is still made up, and I assume most people feel the same way. No matter which way you lean, I'm sure that's the way you will view the outcome of the debate.

That makes sense. I usually hope that I have surrounded myself with people who aren't quick to hit the defriend button over something like politics. I do like hearing opinions and if someone can argue respectfully, I like a good debate.

I totally agree with the fact that the debate was pretty even.

A lot of people seem to be picking that apart. Some are saying that it was Obama being able to reach across party lines and others are saying that it didn't make him look good. I don't know what to think, to be quite honest.

His so called smile bugged me to no end and him ( ... )

Well, you know how I feel on the subject.

McCain really didn't look at Obama even once? What a chickenshit. Either that, or he's secretly racist and knew that looking at Obama would make him run off at the mouth with racist comments.

Yup, I do. :D

He barely looked at Obama and he had this annoying smirk in certain parts. I don't think he's secretly racist but he could've shown Obama more respect.

Apparently even people on NBC commented on the lack of looking at Obama. I was watching it on CNN but this shows that it's not out there.
