"if you've ever found a new author through a short story or not"

Yes and, yes...
I used to love buying the Daw Science fiction anthologies, or the Daw Fantasy anthologies.
But my major weakness was the Chicks in Chainmail series of anthologies, more parodies than stories, but I found some of my favourite authors through them...:)

'Chicks in Chainmail' sounds interesting? Any particular titles?

:) Whoops, Okay so,

The Chicks in Chainmail series is produced by Baen, so a lot of Baens core writers are in there, Eric Flint, Elizabeth Moon etc.
Two writers in particular from the anthologies that I've made sure to keep up with when I could are :

From 'Did you say Chicks?!' Laura Ann Gilman and
from 'Turn the other Chick' Wen Spenser.
(The other 3 book in the series being. 'Chicks in Chainmail','Chicks n' Chained Mails' and 'The Chick is in the Mail')

It was a freak accident that while looking for Laura Ann Gilman novels I came across LUNA books and got totally swept up in a new genre of book.

Though from the 30th anniversary Daw Anthology I did end up buying the entire back catalog of Tanya Huff and Irene Radford.

You are SO lovely. Also, I will link to this Right Now on twitter! :)

*lowers voice* It's actually 13 stories - Amazon & co. have it wrong. Another story got added late in the publication process.

I'll enter! (Especially as Karen was rightfully berating me for not reading short stories just the other day.)
I've got one anthology of short stories - the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance, and I really enjoy it. There are several authors that I now plan to check out as soon as I get to a slightly bigger library than my local one. C. T. Adams & Cathy Clamp for a start, and also Caitlin Kiernan. Although I'd heard good things about them before, the anthology persuaded me that I should check them out.
I will post links very soon. *g*
EDIT: Oh, I tell a lie! - I also have a lovely collection of short stories by Garth Nix, which were wonderful. But I was familiar with him as an author before that, so that didn't really lead me to new authors. *g*

I'm not sure if they classify as "anthologies", but books like LJ Smith's Nightworld series definitely leave me hooked on the characters and wanting more!
