One thing about working at home is you get to/have to make lunch a lot. Breakfast is western style and VERY simple in our home because I am basically very lazy. But, lunch time I like to eat a lot because I don't eat much dinner. The other day, "grandma Matsui" gave us a box of Japanese New Years sweets. They are, I think, mostly made out of sugar and rice flour but are shaped in various beautiful shapes to do with the new year, such as pine needles symbolizing long life, cherry blossoms symbolizing the cycle of life, a fish symbolizing good fortune, a rice bushel ( Read more... )

During the week, Alex, who is in Junior High school, has club activities after school every day until 6:30. Julian has 2 days of karate and 1 day of swimming. Audrey is at daycare until 6:30 unless she is at one of her 2 English classes. In Japan, it is traditional to do "Spring" cleaning at the end of the year in order to welcome the New Year without "hidden dust." This cleaning is usually about stuff you don't do usually - like the dust that's accumulated behind the sofa or cabinets, cleaning the outside/inside of the fridge, cleaning the windows and washing the curtains etc... Japanese people are very picky about rules. Take for instance my daughter's daycare. My daughter has a uniform - which is rare for a daycare facility although many kindergartens have them.
