Ra Rama, Prasanna's "all new" tone

Dec 22, 2005 22:07

Surprise is not just the word when I found Prasanna's "Ra Rama" CD in Music World. Like with some of prasanna old CDs, I was expecting that the circulation would only happen in Madras (and maybe like some of his older CDs, I thought I might even have to go to the extent of contacting his parents to get a CD (No, I'm not joking. Some of his old " ( Read more... )

you should really get a job teaching carnatic theory. I have no idea on this stuff until i read your posts. ha.

To be honest, im not all impressed with hare krishna hare rama music. I mean, there are quite a few songs which are good, like the dashavatara in navaragamalika, but other than that, its too... I dunno. its hard to describe it.

Hare Krishna Hare Rama?! Ra Rama is a Thyagaraja Kriti. Has nothing to do with ISKCON. This is refined music. Not bhajan! I _hate_ those ISKCON types music.

OH yes, those bhajans. I recently saw a bhratanatyam performance by a husband and wife and they used a couple of bhajans about krishna, and omg.. was it bad.

yeah, but well, most 'dance' songs by themselves don't get musically complex (maybe rhythm wise, they do get complex but not in the melodic improvisations).

All the songs that my mother uses while teaching bharathanatyam are no way near something as _detailed_ as, say, a Chakkani Raja or a Dhasu Kovalana. They obviously cannot be. 'Expressiveness' of carnatic music recital is quite different from the Expressiveness of a Bharathantyam performance, isn't it? :)

... and yeah, Prasanna's music is NOT bhajan. :) Try listening to the Ra Rama samples (especially that of the song 'Ra Rama' itself. Its Asaveri).

The one at Bangalore Central (near M.G.Road). Unfortunately, there was just one CD and I took it. Maybe you could call them up and find out when they would get the stock.

I agree with gerani1248. I have learnt a lot of stuff about the raagas from your posts.

One hardly finds Prasanna in the stores
Hope I get lucky too, the last two stores I looked in didnt have his CDs

The thought did cross my mind, but I am gifting it to a friend. My friend likes carnatic music and clever me thought I could gift this one so that I could borrow it later and burn it :P

In his previous carnatic CDs I have never heard a Mridangam. This album has a Mridangam.

I have heard the mridangam earlier in Shakthi - The Omnipotent!

I have a question. Do you know why such songs like Kanakana Ruchira (pancharatna krithi) is never taught directly by a teacher? I love that raagam (verasi)...

Its not 'verasi'. Its 'Varali'. The belief is that Varali is an inauspicious ragam to teach. My teacher teaches Varali songs, though.

(Totally unrelated: A really 'cute' female with a much much cuter voice was being taught 'Kaa Vaa Vaa' in Varali about 4 months back. That day was the best day of attending music classes :D Her voice gives me orgasms).
