Ra Rama, Prasanna's "all new" tone

Dec 22, 2005 22:07

Surprise is not just the word when I found Prasanna's "Ra Rama" CD in Music World. Like with some of prasanna old CDs, I was expecting that the circulation would only happen in Madras (and maybe like some of his older CDs, I thought I might even have to go to the extent of contacting his parents to get a CD (No, I'm not joking. Some of his old " ( Read more... )

I have a question. Do you know why such songs like Kanakana Ruchira (pancharatna krithi) is never taught directly by a teacher? I love that raagam (verasi)...

Its not 'verasi'. Its 'Varali'. The belief is that Varali is an inauspicious ragam to teach. My teacher teaches Varali songs, though.

(Totally unrelated: A really 'cute' female with a much much cuter voice was being taught 'Kaa Vaa Vaa' in Varali about 4 months back. That day was the best day of attending music classes :D Her voice gives me orgasms).

Thanks and wecome .

If you are looking for buying Prasanna's Jazz works, I may not be of great help. Primarily because in India, his Jazz CDs aren't seen in stores. "Be The Change" is my favourite. There is another album titled 'Peaceful', but it isn't all that great, IMVHO.

His carnatic CDs are available decently well. There are two 'types' of his Carnatic CDs. 1. Those that were played using his old fender stratocaster. It has a 'tingy' and 'thin' tone and I don't particularly enjoy those. Besides, his older albums seem more 'immature' and not very creative (alapanais, especially. He plays standard alapanais for every Nattai). The latter albums see a 'humbucking' pickup on his guitar and sound warm, smooth and more mellow.

My favourites are 'Shakthi the Omnipotent', 'Natabhairavi' and now 'Raa Rama'[*]. I have some of his older albums as well, but I hardly listen to them.

how can a ragam be inauspicious? hm...

okok.. How is a voice cute? are there any famous artists out there who you think have cute or sexy voices?

Lol. I really cant tell. I mean the whole religious thing is enough to cover the whole thing.

That is why I said 'belief is that ...'. Belief is never rational. You are never supposed to ask questions against a 'belief' system :) You believe there is a God. Now if I ask you the question of "How can there be a God? Have you seen it?", would you be able to answer? :)

The sexiest voice that I've seen of them all is that of Lalitha Sivakumar, the accompanying vocal "support" for D K Pattammal. The second sexy voice is that of Radha, MSSubbulakshmi's vocal support. heh, I seem to be in love with only the 'support' females ;)

LOL. I wasnt asking for any rational thought. sorry if i worded it wrong. I was wondering if there was a story behind it. you know, some anciet dude/saint created this ragam and then someone else used it and he became angry and cursed it.

or something like that.

haha. wow. cough. no male voices you find sexy?

"Sexy"? no... ;/ But I think Sanjay Subramanyam has a 'good' voice. I totally hate T.N.Seshagopalan... he just annoys the hell out of me because somehow I think there is some lack of shruthi shuddham in his voice.

In that case, I guess you either do not possess the musical talent/knowledge to even appreciate good music- brigas, intellectually stimulating thala nuances in swaras, complex alapanas and neravals.. leave it dude.. all this is probably too much for you.. you can maybe listen to the shruthi box everyday- you'll have the satisfaction of listening to your so-called "shruthi-sutham" types;sans music of course!
