Number of Userpics

Title
Number of Userpics

Short, concise description of the idea
I feel that the number of userpics a person has should not be limited as they are with those of us who have basic and plus accounts.

Full description of the ideaI have many userpics that I would like to add to my account, but I only have a limit of 15. There should be an unlimited amount ( Read more... )

There should be an unlimited amount of userpics per person no matter what the account type that person has.

GreatestJournal thought this was an excellent idea! Then they discovered just how expensive large numbers of userpics were to serve (read: the cost of bandwidth and transfer made their promise of 2000 userpics utterly unfeasible to maintain for the price they were charging for *paid* accounts, let alone what money they weren't making on *free* accounts).

Basically, this will never, ever happen, but eventually, someone will come along with numerical data that reinforces what everyone is saying: "Unlimited userpics: sure, they'd be nice to have for our LJs, but not at the expense of HAVING our LJs."

Wait, GreatestJournal had paid accounts? I'm almost certain that they only had ads, and fairly small ones at that, that you could even turn off.

Huh, you know, that sounds more correct/familiar now that you mention it. Which just makes GJ's userpics proposal that much more audacious and unsustainable.

I don't get why these repeat requests that will never be approved are constantly posted.

A lot of times, it's because a previous poster has deleted a discussion because they didn't like the community feedback.

In this particular case, while there were other suggestions that covered increasing userpics, this was the only one that proposed unlimited userpics for everyone.

I realize that this submission may be unique, but it will never ever ever be implemented. It's just taking up valuable screen space in the community.

This community is for LJ staff to read through to get ideas for possible new features, correct? So clogging it up with stuff that will never happen just makes it harder for the good submissions to be seen and implemented.

Even suggestions that LiveJournal users overwhelming don't like (whatever the reasons they don't - including because they're financially untenable as this one seems to be) are useful to keep, if only because the comments record *why* others don't like them.

While userpics are relatively trivial in the grander scheme of things, this does not mean that it costs LiveJournal nothing to offer them. Unless someone invents a way for userpics to stop costing LiveJournal money to offer, I would be against this suggestion.

I don't think that anyone is going to be able to figure out a way to make icons free to offer.

This would be a nice idea if only technical reality weren't what it is.

Er, no. Sending userpics to you on the wire costs money. Disproportionately great gobs of money, IIRC what synecdochic wrote in answer to a similar discussion. If you want more userpics, you should be prepared to give LJ more money than shoveling your userpics out to everyone viewing your entries or comments costs. Or do you want LiveJournal to go the way of the dodo GreatestDefunctJournal?

No. I have a paid account for a reason, and giving everyone who doesn't pay even less incentive to ever support the site is a bad idea.
