Permanent Members and Icon Space

Short, concise description of the idea
Permanent Members should get more icon space

Full description of the ideaI think that there should be a perk for permanent members and we should get more icon space. After all, what is the bonus for that? We should get at least 500 spots or some significant amount more than ( Read more... )

You already get 197; which is more than Paid or Plus users get. And if we get 500, why not 1000?

Currently, permanent users have 50 more icon spaces than any paid user, no matter how many loyalty userpics they have, has. Permanent users also have the maximum number of loyalty userpics.

Given that userpics soak up a lot of bandwidth, I'm fine with what I have now.

Exactly. I'm still not over the irony of how for years, people were all "But GJ gives you 2000 userpics!" (it was that number, wasn't it?), and when the site started to die its slow and agonising death, userpics were the one feature they kept reducing and reducing.

No. LJ doesn't have any real reason to make permanent accounts that attractive. They're a plus for the user, not the company. Permanent accounts don't make any money for LJ beyond the initial payment, so adding any incentives except right before a sale is just bad business.

Permanent accounts do 2 things for LJ:

1) They provide money upfront equal to a few years' membership
2) They provide a more solid userbase. Permanent members are less likely to move to a competitor - and in this game, userbase is crucial.

I dunno if I agree with those assertions exactly as you put them, if that's somehow supposed to be in support of giving perm accounts 500 icons.

1) The ones who bought theirs provided money up front equal to a few year's membership, but they get more than any paid account alone, and they get it indefinitely. It's not like we're enticing people to buy permanent accounts at the moment, so like the OP says, why give them more at this time? Additionally, they do not have less icons than they were promised when they got the account; instead, the number of icons available to them grows at a slight but steady rate.
2) If they're less likely to move to a competitor, why would they need 500 icons to have them stay? See above, where they already get more features than any other account anyway. What other competitor is going to offer more icons without compromising on other features? The biggest competitors don't attract LJ users because they have more icons.

I wasn't saying "and therefore they should get 500 icons". I was pointing out that permanent users do have a value to LJ.

As a Permanent user, I not only agree with what others have said above, but I will also be blunt:

What in the world do you need 500 icons for?! I'm barely using 1/5 of that (or 1/2 of my allotment) and don't intend to use more.

I'm not a permanent user, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I have a hard time deciding with only 20! 500-- I'd spend more time searching than posting!

There are quite a few of us who could fill 500 with no trouble. I know that may seem unreal to those not really 'into' icons, but it's true!

I don't support an increase to 500, but I do get the request. If you're not into icons for all occasions, you'll never understand why some people are. End of story.

No, I totally get "an icon for all occasions!' I just don't have that many occasions. :)
