I favour this - especially lj_maintenance. The savings to Support in time, and the increase in goodwill (from users realising that "LJ's sucking, why doesn't it work" is often really, "LJ's doing planned maintenance") would be worth it. And we already automatically add paid people to paidmembers so there is precedent.

I figured support would like this -- the idea keeps cropping up over and over again and I just figured I'd mention it.

I'm thinking news would be good, too. In UPI there are already people asking about inactive userpics and stuff. News is good for policy changes, like that.

I believe there's already an array somewhere that specifies friends that should be added.

Yup, here it is in cgi-bin/ljconfig.pl:

# initial friends for new accounts.
# leave undefined if you don't want to use it.
# @INITIAL_FRIENDS = qw(news);

It's standard for e-mail gateways (Hotmail, Yahoo!, etc.) and messenger services (AIM, MSN Messenger) to do this; I think it only makes sense that we should, too.

Wee, that was unclear. Sorry. =P

E-mail gateways automatically send you e-mail when they have policy changes, planned downtime, etc.

Messenger services automatically notify you (though not always in a messaging format) when they have planned downtime.

I think it only makes sense for LJ to do the same, by doing as you suggest.

Heh... I've suggested this twice, everyone agreed that we should do it (including the developers)

1 year later, nothing happened.

So, good luck!

But remember, we're on LJ time! Where soon == 'two years or more'
