The news and lj_maintenance communities should automatically be added to a user's Friends list when s/he first create his/her account here at LiveJournal.
An ordered list of benefits

This will really help people know what's going on with the site -- I know I didn't find out about news and lj_maintenance until I was using LiveJournal for a year or so.

Getting information directly from the source is better than things getting twisted around and stuff.

Automatic adding of friends isn't something people may like.

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

I think DeadJournal does this already, no? I don't know exactly what needs to be done, though; I don't know the code well enough.
