There are probably some fun things that someone could do to the style in news so that theljstaff could use inline markup in the entry to call upon predefined styles for various formatting needs so it looks as desired in when viewed in the journal, doesn't break when viewed on a friends page, and if the reader has similar things defined in their own journal's style, it would look smooth and spiffy on their friends page as well.

In fact, if newly created styles had support for, say, treating

-encased paragraphs differently than
built in, that could be fun for the whole site, and perhaps old S2 styles could be tweaked as well. (It would be a decent chunk of work and thus I might be proposing Mart Bug Death, but it would also be Doing It Right.)

They do? :o I never noticed that at all, and I have my journal's viewing options set to view all comment and journal entry view pages in my journal's style. And I just tried it just now, and news displays in my journal's own style, and the comment pages are unstyled (since I disabled custom comment pages).

Could it have something to do with the fact that I always use the Lynx site scheme (which, of course, would only apply to comment pages)? That's the only thing I can think of.

I use the lynx site scheme, but when the news posts to which I've linked appear on my friends page they're at variance with that page's style which make them actively painful to see.

Hmmm... weird. =/ I've never seen this happen at all, either on my PC or on my mobile phone.

Can you provide a screenshot of this so that I can have a better idea of what you're talking about? Because maybe you're talking about a particular incidence of this happening that I've never run into.
