I'd be more hyped about it if the Democrats were more than "those guys who hadn't fucked everything up" most realistic case scenario is that Bush dosn't get a free pass on his policies anymore because legislation will be on a 2 year lockdown. something tells me the new direction isn't going to bring forth positive fruit any time in the foreseeable future

Yeah, I'm sure they've made their share of mistakes, but I'm so tired of Iraq & the war & Republican conservative crap, I'm just ready for something different.
That's part of why I wanted Ford to win Senate. The fact that so few African American Senators exist, or that, like you said, we haven't had a dem. senator since 1955, it's just time for something different. I am happy that the "blue wave", got the majority, even if it just puts a standstill on Bush's legislation & doesn't accomplish much else (which I feel is untrue, I think it could accomplish a lot).
And yeah, the same sex marriages thing is horrible. I agree with what you said, it's like we're trying to be progressive but we don't want anyone to know it. I think there's a strong liberal current running through this state, but it's being trampled by a strong face of Republican middle/upper class conservatism. Sadness.

Unfortunately, things like the war (Iraq and terror), and conservative crap isn't just going away. if you look harder at the election results a lot of the new dems are very conservative dems like Heath Shuler who got elected in NC and Ford JR who didn't. and they got in almost solely on the basis that they wern't republicans.
the Bush damage has been done, We have a conservative Supreme Court. we're in a war we can't afford to pull out of. and now that the elections are over gas prices are going back up. I'm holding the 2007 congress up to a really high standard, they made some fairly lofty claims and failure to instantly adhere to them should earn this congress the "purple wave"

I think this last election proved that in a lot of places it was enough if you said you weren't Republican. I noticed a purple wave, to use your term, in the Democratic candidates, especially in Ford, who I paid close attention to. I think that shows an effort to shift towards the center. Being moderate might not be so dead after all...
