A friend who reads' a friend indeed
My book for book group this month is Three Men in a Boat, but I haven't done much reading for it. I doubt I'm even a third of the way through. Happily, it's quite easy to read, but it's a book that's easily distracted, so while you might read 20 pages in a sitting, the story has moved on at a glacial pace. Late in the week I finished Twelve Reasons why I love her. I went through it section a day like I'd planned to, though I think that I cheated when one of the chapters was only 2 pages long.

Movies
I've just finished watching Breakfast at Tiffany's. Since I'm preparing for the return of Mad Men, I felt that it was only right to watch actual 60s movies as well as 2009 TV that wants to be from the 60s. My experience with things like this has been a bit hit and miss - I loved the remake of Ocean's 11 but couldn't watch the original at all ( Read more... ) -

A day after I got back to the flat, 12 Reasons why I love her was waiting in my letterbox, having come all the way from Amazon.com (not Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com). I'd seen one of the chapters already via Scans_daily (RIP in peace, etc) and was intrigued, but not overly. On the radio, you hear November rain
I picked up Clubbing at the weekend. It's a book that I never thought I would pick up from reading the preview, but I saw it in Borders, picked it up and was generally impressed. Book group tonight was a set of Edgar Allan Poe short stories. The Fall of the House of Usher was as creepy as I remembered it being (and is the benchmark for creepy and scary fiction - the scenario and the way that it builds tension is terrifying) and the joke story of The Man Who Was Used Up was a lot of fun, even if the ending was a bit crap. Oh hells yes!
Sunnyside, the sophomore novel from Glenn David Gold, is out next month. Gold wrote Carter Beats the Devil, which remains the best novel that I've read. Twice. I know that I gush over things a lot, but there are not enough superlatives to describe this book. It's a great story, told very well. It's exciting, with wonderfully staged, ( Read more... )
