Re-watched Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last night. Ahhhhhh, it's so good. The acting, the tension, the pacing - fantastic. I really need to see the next two. (And get around to reading the first two books, since I own them. They're just so long that I get intimidated. This summer ( Read more... )

Yeah Idk about the American version--I saw some pics of the actress up on Jezebel and she seems to be slipping into the role (though to be fair, so people say she's oversexualizing Lisbeth). I'll be upset if they cut out her relationship with her friend in the second movie. I'm frightened.

You're right about the research, I know some people didn't like what it did for the pacing, but I thought it helped a) establish her as being smart 2) give opportunity for her to develop a realistic relationshio with Blomkvist and 3) establish tension.

I think I Lisbeth is a cut over the action hero because you're constantly seeing that interplay of fear and rage in her. She's not this unthinking hero, but a flesh and blood person with genuine fight-flight responses and you really see that in the acting. I thought it was such a nuanced portrayal. I think that's how the film avoids sensationalizing it, because you see that as tough as Lisbeth is, it's taken a toll on her.

I tend to be suspicious of American remakes in general, actually. Americanization tend to mean making things smoother - less complex, less awkward, less edge. And I hope they don't cut out her bisexuality!

I love how well it establishes Lisbeth and Blomkvist as smart and thorough (and maybe obsessive?). Plus, the missing girl's uncle had obsessed over it for fourty years - it shouldn't be too easy to figure out. I was engaged in the film the entire time, so the pacing works for me. But I've found that I have slightly different standards than many people on that point, so.

And yes to your entire last paragraph. She gets scared and even panicked, which makes her feal much more real to me.

The first movie is like two and half hours and apparently the next two are just a little shorter. I'm really impressed with the first one. ...maybe don't watch it right before you go to bed due to super disturbing content. (Non-sensationalized and brutally realistic which means I don't find it offensive but yeah.)

The books look so long to me. But then I want to read them? But. Commitment!! Sob.

I will definitely keep that in mind.

I want to read them! But I also need to finish rereading Lord of the Rings for class, and I simply have no time.

Man, I tried to read LoTR during the movies craze but I ended up giving up 100 pages in, when they were walking through the field after just having left the shire. My dad never finished them either. WHY SO DESCRIPTIVE, TOLKIEN?! My brother, by contrast, got through them without issue.

At least you've read them before? I guess? Good luck!

I loved the books and the movies! So much! The third one is just...SO SATISFYING. LOL.

Yeah, I'll have to see about the American ones. Apparently they're still taking place in Sweden, which is good. And the actors are doing Swedish accents. I heard Rooney Mara was really good in her small part in the Social Network, so hopefully that bodes well.

And as for the book lengths, the printing is pretty big so they actually don't take that long to get through, and they're so engaging that you'll probably blast through them pretty quickly, I definitely did! They are quite addictive!
