Re-watched Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last night. Ahhhhhh, it's so good. The acting, the tension, the pacing - fantastic. I really need to see the next two. (And get around to reading the first two books, since I own them. They're just so long that I get intimidated. This summer!!)
The books/movies tend be discussed for their disturbingly realistic portrayal of sexual violence, and managing to connect the incidents to a larger societal pattern of sexual violence against women. It's very well done. (
See this festivid entry. Warning for major triggers and also footage from all three films.) Lisbeth also gets a fair amount of discussion, since she's such a fascinating character. She has a very vengeful side, but has a weakness for genuinely good people. Also: badass. And kind of terrifying, really.
What I haven't seen discussed is the fact that at least in the first film, we see a hell of a lot of research being done. Seriously, it's like an ode to research. Digging through boxes of unorganized photo negatives from fourty years ago, decades old business statements... Lisbeth tends towards computer hacking, but we still see the sheer amount of information she gathers - takes a lot of time to weed through. Even with the movie not really showing the research that doesn't go anywhere, I think it gives a sense of just how much work goes into investigations/research than any other movie I've seen.
(I'm not sure how I feel about the American adaptation of the books that's being made. Daniel Craig just seems like too much of a hunk to play Blomkvist - he's so muscular! The actor in this was reasonably nice-looking, but in a normal sort of way. Not an action guy, for sure. Maybe if they downplay his muscles...)
