It may have been part of Oprah's book club, but I really didn't care too much for it ( Read more... )

is this book like 10 years old where the young female character is the hope for mankind and she's traveling with a retired wrestler?

Your statement describes my icon, and not The Road which I have posted about. I use Swan Song for book/horror related posts. I'd say that Swan Song is more than 20 years old though. Swan (Sue Wanda) had the power of life within her, and Black Frankenstein (Josh, I think) was the wrestler. It's my favorite.

It's the Cormac McCarthy(however he spells 'McArthy') book. He's famous for the linguistic tics.

I really enjoyed the book, largely because of the completely realized world they were in. But I also found it completely bleak. There is just no hope. Plants can't grow, so the food will eventually be gone, unless they grow people just for food.

There was a basement load of people locked up. It didn't seem that there were many procreating either.

I think children can grow without sunlight; look what happened in Austria, where that guy raped his daughter and three of his children lived with her in the dungeon without ever having seeing the sun. :-/

I haven't heard that story. I'm reminded of Flowers in the Attic as well.

I'm sure the body would undergo some sort of adaptation, but based on my training so far, I would think that some growth would be stunted.

Yes it would. The oldest daughter, who spent 19 years underground, lost all her teeth and had general organ failure. The whole story was discovered when she was rushed to the hospital. The doctors still don't know what's wrong with her; I definitely think the lack of Vitamin D (together with other deprivations) is behind it.

Yup - Vitamin D and sunlight go together.
What a gruesome story!
