It may have been part of Oprah's book club, but I really didn't care too much for it.
This didn't lend itself very well to a 'read aloud' book. I wasn't always sure who was speaking, as it lacked quotes and apostrophes. The main characters did not even have names or descriptions so I found that I didn't care about them as much as I thought I should have. Sure, you are rooting for them to survive in this grave wasteland of America. But I wanted to care for them more than I did. Many stories will make me cry, and this one did not.
It paints a very bleak picture of post-war life, and is certainly not optimistic about anything.
At least it read pretty quickly. When there was dialogue, it consisted of:
Are you okay?
I'm okay.
Okay.
Okay.
It also goes against my science courses that say that children must have sunlight to grow. Okay. Enough.
