[The Doctor saw the message and predictably didn't respond. Instead, he practically sprinted the short distance between his room and the infirmary. He could already imagine how he felt, really probably already knew how he felt.

He went directly to Rex's bedside, and he knew... well, he knew that it made Rex uncomfortable. But he had to try. He had to talk to him. He took his hand and held it firmly.] I'm here if you need me. [Despite everything, he was still there.]

[Rex nodded, allowing the Doctor to take his hand. He offered it a squeeze in return, then pulled his hand away-- not because he didn't like the gesture, but because he needed both hands to write. He grabbed a notebook and pen, not wishing to type anything, for fear it might accidentally end up on the network.]

I've made my decision, about who I want to be.

[He held up the notepad for the Doctor, then continued writing.]

I can't don't want to live like this, Doctor.

[He frowned at the words, not because that he disagreed, or that he knew it would take more than something superficial like appearance. But... That he knew how badly it must have hurt for Rex to come to that decision.]

It'll be for the best, I think. Sometimes we need the chance to be someone else, when we wear ourselves out.

[He couldn't help but liken it to regeneration. And he pet Rex on top of his head.] Don't worry. I won't have you in here indecent. I'll leave my hat with you.

[He nodded and wrote:]

It will be different this time. Without Armand.

[And without Wichita, too. A consideration that was still painful for him. Both of them had made it difficult for him to face himself in the mirror, when he had a face that was "easier" for others to look at. Without Wichita, it reminded him of her absence, of all of the "first" experiences he had with her, starting with her visiting him in the infirmary after his surgery. With Armand... it reminded him of every foul and terrible thing the vampire had done to him. He always wondered if Armand targeted him so intently because of his face. It was the face of a victim, of vampire bait. He wanted to cut it off.

Now, however... something had to give. He held a distracted look on his face for a few moments, then blinked and looked at the Doctor, trying to offer some kind of smile, although it was difficult, and wrote:]

It may clash with the hospital gown.

[Pause, then he continued.]

What methods are available to me, Doctor?

I'm sure you can tell from Crane's post.

Elphaba was generally keeping an eye on Rex when she noticed his small break down. It disturbed her, and she wasn't quite sure how to deal with it. She stared for a moment, looking awkward.

[He rubbed his eyes furiously, then stopped once he realized that somebody was watching. He tensed and looked at Elphaba, but didn't say anything... Largely because he couldn't while he had this ventilator on.]

[After a moment, she said,] Just raise your hand if you need anything. [She'd never seen a ventilator before, aside from the one Rex usually wore, but she didn't see how he could speak through the one currently on his mouth, so made the assumption that he couldn't.]

[He nodded, then in something of a poor attempt at making conversation, wrote the following on his notepad:]

I didn't know you worked here.

[And he held it up for her to see.]

Hey.

[Harper had left it a little while before coming to see Rex. At least until he was calmed down a little, but when he does come, he comes bearing gifts!]

I got something for ya. Found it in your room.

[He moves to settle into the seat at the side of Rex's bed, and hands him the rolled up piece of paper.]

[Rex looked up, relieved to see Harper. He took the piece of paper and looked at it curiously, then wrote on his notepad:]

Who was in my room?

Just me. I was checking to see if you had any spares. I mean, for your ventilator.

[Harper gestured to the sheet of paper.]

I don't know how that made it to you. It was in an empty bottle when I found it.

[He paused then, just for a moment.]

I uh, kinda glanced over it. Just to make sure it wasn't someone threatening you.

The spare was damaged.

[He looked at the paper again, running his fingers over it, then unrolled it to take a look. His brow furrowed in confusion for a moment, but his expression softened as he continued reading. When he was finished, he set it aside and looked away, saying-- well, writing-- nothing.]

I'm sorry, Rex. I had no idea they were going to do any of it.

I believe you. Crane would have rubbed it in if you had any involvement, I'm sure.

Do you need anything?

Should I-- I mean, do you want me to come visit?

Nothing that can be brought to me right now.

If you'd like I can't promise I'll be very good company. Unless you don't mind passing notes.
