The Case Against FanFicAddict

Jun 05, 2009 14:11

On June 1, 2009, pepperlandgirl4 reported that Fanficaddict plagiarized eurydice72's story, Rhapsody in Oil. See this original post.

After receiving that report, Eurydice contacted me, sharing that on April 24, 2008, she'd been emailed by Fanficaddict:

I love, love, love your work. My biggest absolute favorite is “Legions of True Hearts”. I constantly recommend it to ( Read more... )

Ya know normally when there's a plagiarist I'm somewhere between highly annoyed, angry, and amused (because from a certain point of view when they try to explain themselves it can be quite funny). This time I feel slightly sorry for this one. Given her emails it seems she doesn't understand the difference between being inspired (and what to do for writing from that inspiration) and copying and pasting. Seems like an inexperienced reader loving a story and not understanding writing. I'd almost think that she doesn't understand what exactly writing exactly entails....

That being said she's still wrong, but at least she's owned up to it.

From my point of view it's hard to figure out exactly what the truth is. Her actions with the author in the report seem to indicate being unaware. Her comments however the opposite (that or just not understanding some general writing principles). This plagiarist seems to have the biggest contradictions I've seen a report on here.

*g* Agreed. It's been a long time since I've worked a case that kept surprising me the way this one did.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the hard work you did on this. I hadn't seen some of the examples you pointed out (though I have to admit to chortling at the Chloe wine mistake), but I'm glad that it seems to have been resolved peacefully.

You're welcome. I'm going out of town for a while, so I'm glad that she responded promptly, and I could summarize this before I left.

Thank you for handling this so calmly.
