The Case Against fanficaddict

Jun 01, 2009 22:49

Hi Community,

Tonight I followed a link to a Smallville story called A World of Our Own on the Smallville fanboard, Divine Intervention. (Registration is required to view the post. I have also taken several screencaps so you don't have to register to the forum if you don't want to. Cap 1. Cap 2. Cap 3. Cap 4. And Cap 5.)

The prose was immediately familiar to me. It bears a striking resemblence to eurydice72's Buffy/Spike fic Rhapsody in Oil. A World of Our Own was posted on April 28, 2008. Rhapsody in Oil was originally published in 2003. I don't know the exact date, but Here is an award it won in May 2003.

fanficaddict did take the time to paraphrase the story, but she made basic, superficial changes. Note the opening paragraphs. I have taken the liberty of bolding all of the words directly stolen, and putting the most obvious "rewrites" in italics.

This is from Rhapsody in Oil.

It came out of nowhere. One moment, the midnight sky was twinkling down in refreshing mettle; the next, sheets of rain were sweeping across the cemetery, blacking out the heavens as the gales whistled over the headstones, the distant rolls of thunder adding their bass voices to the storm’s song. A mouse tried skittering to safety under a bush, only to find itself picked up, tossed around like a lost ship at sea, and unceremoniously deposited over twenty yards away, muddied and more than a little dazed. On unsure feet, it disappeared into the darkness.

Pulling her very non-waterproof jacket closer around her thin frame, Buffy bent her head against the wind as she headed back to the graveyard’s gate. Slaying called on account of rain, she thought irritably. And Giles better not give me any crap for it ‘cause I ain’t in the mood.

This is from A World of Our Own.

The storm came out of nowhere. One moment, the midnight sky was twinkling benignly; the next, sheets of rain were pelting Metropolis, blacking out the heavens as the gales whistled over the cold skyscrapers, grey silhouettes against the inky backdrop, the distant rolls of thunder adding their bass voices to the storm’s aria.

Pulling her flimsy jacket around her thin frame, Lois bent her head against the wind as she headed back out of the alley where she was supposed to have met her contact. She’d been trying for days to make contact with this informant. This twitch was gonna be a no-show, she thought irritably. Grant better not give me any crap for it ‘cause I ain’t in the mood.

It goes on like this, chapter after chapter. She does make a few changes. The first sex scene is her original work, though she does steal quite extensively in that scene, too.

I have contacted eurydice72 about this. I have not contacted fanficaddict or the Divine Intervention moderators.
