He'd paused to admire one such plant - a bush, really, that was an amazing red colour. It reminded him of the autumn leaves back home... (sigh~)
Then, his nostalgic rumitations were violently disrupted when the bush burst into flames!
"AHHHH---!!"

Well, until the bush started screaming, anyway.
Why, it'd never done that before!
"Ah!"
Brought out of his thoughts with a start, Ukitake actually jumped a little, on the other side of the bush - and stopped spraying abruptly, quite thoroughly alarmed. The bush continued burning happily, being as highly flammable as it was, but that didn't really help matters much at all; it was hard enough to see through the plant when it wasn't on fire, and now Ukitake couldn't have spotted someone on the other side of it if he'd wanted to ( ... )

But before he could even move to go find help or something, the bush spoke. He thought? (This was all getting massively Biblical. Talking burning bush. Israel would be impressed.) All the same, he gave an instinctive reply:
"I- I'm not Plant, I'm Canada, you know?" Then realizing that he'd been asked if he was all right, he answered hurriedly, "B-but I'm okay, th-thank you for asking? ...Um, are you all right? If- if I may ask?"
...Did he seriously just ask that?

It had a name, too? --One that wasn't the strange and alien one his boss had given him earlier? Well, this day was just becoming full of surprises...increasingly baffled, Ukitake straightened completely, still staring at the bush. How was it talking like that? It didn't seem to be moving at all, apart from the flames.
...But such a polite plant! Surprised as the inquiry being thrown back at him, Ukitake blinked a couple of times.
"Oh - no, I'm - I'm quite alright, thank you! ...Though the concern is...appreciated..."
Spraying it with fire again didn't seem like a very good idea yet - but Ukitake was at a loss for what to do otherwise. He couldn't just leave it here, could he? Especially now that it was speaking to him...
"Your name is...Canada, you said? Ah, actually, I think I've met someone else named Canada before! Though I admit, I never thought it was a very common name." Or rather, a name that a plant would possibly take for itself. But then again, this was outer space, he supposed...

It takes Ashura's intervention to finally catch his attention - but it certainly does, and Ukitake is brought quite soundly back to the present in the process.
"What - oh!" Goodness, the grass definitely wasn't supposed to be on fire too ( ... )

His power over a natural started flame was minimal. He could stop its forward progression, but the things it had already latched onto were beyond his power to save. They would burn, and the fire would rage till it ran out of fuel. One he started with fire he produced was another matter, but not a point that had any effect at this point.
"You could have hurt someone," he admonished, glaring at the flames of the red leaves, as if daring them to try and spread again.

Ukitake straightened at length, the fire on the grass effectively doused for the meantime, though now there were scroch marks around the general proximity of the bush itself. The shrubbery, on the other hand, was still left unwatered, but the subsiding flames were by now all but gone, and the red leaves bobbed a bit on their own volition, as if vaguely irritable about the interruptance of their nourishment.
"It's - this sort of plant doesn't sit very well with water at all," Ukitake continued somewhat sheepishly, with a slight gesture in the bush's direction. "So they give us flamethrowers to help the growing process instead. Although, really, it wasn't supposed to spread any further than the bush itself at all. That's a fault entirely on my part."

"What in the blazes are you doing?!" He had taken a lot more than being burnt by flames in his years, but it didn't mean he liked danger. The flames were starting to spread, though, so he rushed to look for a water hose. Once found, he doubled back and began to douse the flames.

He didn't have time to actually reply to the man, as he dashed off for - ah, a hose - shortly after he threw the question, but Ukitake supposed that was the least of concerns at present. The stranger had the right idea, at any rate; the fire had spread to parts of grass that weren't supposed to be flaming at all, and grabbing a water container from his bucket himself Ukitake immediately began dousing some of the flames himself.
But he's certainly not short of words or apologies all the while, at any rate.
"Ah - don't get too much water on that bush, please!" It's interjected hastily upon Zechs's return with the hose, but Ukitake straightened shortly after saying it, regarding the latter stranger with clear concern. "But I'm - very sorry, I didn't mean for it to get...quite this out of hand. Are you ( ... )

"I'm alright, but you should really watch those flames better," he replied, still looking a bit displeased. But the other man apologized, and seemed truly sorry, so that feeling won't last long.

Still, Ukitake returned his glance back to the latter man at length, and smiled a bit. "Though I ought to be thanking you too, actually! The fire probably would have spread a lot farther if you hadn't noticed it in time..."
