He wasn't usually quite so terrible about letting his mind wander to a point that he promptly forgot about what he was doing; but such had become the case for Ukitake at the moment. So it was that he didn't notice the fire spreading at all, holding the spray can upraised and moving it occasionally, rather as someone would with a water hose when sprinkling daisies.

It takes Ashura's intervention to finally catch his attention - but it certainly does, and Ukitake is brought quite soundly back to the present in the process.

"What - oh!" Goodness, the grass definitely wasn't supposed to be on fire too...

Ukitake doesn't pause to wonder why it isn't spreading any further - not yet, anyway - but immediately attended to the most important matter first, and promptly pulled a container of water from the bucket he'd stored the spray can in earlier. The water in question had been provided for just such a reason as this, and he quickly started pouring some over the afflicted areas, dousing the spots around the bush most affected by the flames. The red shrubbery itself was given a wide berth, and was left continuing to burn - but, even as the seconds ticked by, the blaze on its scarlet leaves was already subsiding, with no more fire being provided to it.

And it seemed hardly worse for wear besides a bit of smoke, oddly enough.

"Ukitake what was what?" Ashura demanded, releasing his hold ont he flame as Ukitake tended to the immediate danger.

His power over a natural started flame was minimal. He could stop its forward progression, but the things it had already latched onto were beyond his power to save. They would burn, and the fire would rage till it ran out of fuel. One he started with fire he produced was another matter, but not a point that had any effect at this point.

"You could have hurt someone," he admonished, glaring at the flames of the red leaves, as if daring them to try and spread again.

"I'm - oh, I'm very sorry, I didn't - I wasn't paying attention at all, I'm afraid."

Ukitake straightened at length, the fire on the grass effectively doused for the meantime, though now there were scroch marks around the general proximity of the bush itself. The shrubbery, on the other hand, was still left unwatered, but the subsiding flames were by now all but gone, and the red leaves bobbed a bit on their own volition, as if vaguely irritable about the interruptance of their nourishment.

"It's - this sort of plant doesn't sit very well with water at all," Ukitake continued somewhat sheepishly, with a slight gesture in the bush's direction. "So they give us flamethrowers to help the growing process instead. Although, really, it wasn't supposed to spread any further than the bush itself at all. That's a fault entirely on my part."

Ashura sighed and shook his head, smoothing his robes.

"What is wrong that you would forget you were using a flame thrower?" he asked him, his voice displaying concern and perhaps a bit of irritation as he glanced at the flowers that seemed to so crave fire.

He would tend to that later, but maybe it would be best if he figured out what was up with his work partner before that. No need for another accident.

"Wrong? Oh, I wouldn't say it was anything like that, necessarily!"

Ukitake tossed Ashura a bit of a smile, and then started making his way back to the bucket he'd set down next to the bush, putting the flamethrower can and the water container back inside.

"Just...hm. Got lost in thought for a bit, that's all. That sort of thing occasionally happens to the best, doesn't it? Though I'd hardly claim to be the best myself, even..."

"Perhaps I had best handle this section since you are distracted," he advised the other, though his brow remained puckered. "Perhaps a break for tea would do us both good, in fact."

He thought getting Ukitake away from the flowers might be a good idea - and the flame thrower. From what he knew from Shunsui's tellings the other had much skill and power, but he was unsure of the other's control.
