Date: 6 December 2005 Characters: Gilderoy and... Location: The Gildery Shopppe Status: Public Summary: It's that time of year again! Completion: Incomplete
After her falling out with Michael the past weekend, Marietta had been doing a lot of moping. Going to work, making dinner, and falling into bed early, alone. A few days of this, though, and she started to feel as though she was wallowing. She did not want to wallow. She wasn't sure what to do about Michael, but she did know that if she did nothing she would end up depressed.
The easiest solution was some retail therapy.
Deciding she needed some new work robes as well as dress robes for Ernie & Eleanor's wedding, she stopped in at The Gildery to see just what the shop offered.
Gilderoy had sent Daphne off on an errand earlier in the day, so he was spending his time upstairs. Of course, there was always the risk of it being a Witherbottom day, but if she came in, he had arranged for Knobby to run interference for him.
He had taken to studying charms in his spare time, trying to learn as much as he could about them before Christmas. All that was part of the Christmas surprise he had for Julian. When he heard the little bell over the door jingle, he put down his book and smiled warmly.
As luck had it, his first customer of the day was just about as far from resembling Mrs. Witherbottom as one could be - gender aside.
"Good morning," he cheered, "and what can I do for you today, my dear?"
Gazing at some nice dress robes that were hanging on a wall, Marietta heard a voice from long ago. She'd heard rumours about the ownership of the Gildery, and now she knew they were true. Turning, she greeted a handsome, somewhat older wizard with a blinding smile.
"Professor Lockhart? Is that really you?" He was a terrible teacher, but that was long ago, and it couldn't hurt to butter him up a bit. "I don't suppose you would remember me. Marietta Edgecombe. I was in your third-year Defence Against the Dark Arts class when you taught at Hogwarts. It's nice to see you again. So this is your shop?"
"Remember?" He knew this sort of thing would come up again. Of course, he never wanted to admit that he had no recollection of that year, and any attempt at thinking back past his accident would always give him a headache

Rabastan was not sure if Mr. Lockhart preferred to do business in Galleons, Pounds or trade, but he made sure he had enough to offer as a deposit regardless of the form of currency desired. He felt bad that he had not had this idea sooner and hoped that Mr. Lockhart would be able to accommodate him by Christmas.
The very sparkly owl near the window made a soft noise as he entered the Gildery. Rabastan recognized her as having delivered messages from Julian on occasion. "Milady Midas, you are looking in fine feather today." He inclined his head in appreciation of her beauty and the owl preened for him.
"Ah, Mr. Lockhart! Good day to you, sir." Rabastan had not seen him since the day of the wedding at his church.
For the first time in ages, Gilderoy was attempting that horrible "books" thing Julian was always talking about. Of course, his partner had told him several times that he needn't try to work on them - that it was part of his job to do the books for Gilderoy. Still, this time, Gilderoy wanted to do it on his own.
It meant sitting down staring at numbers for hours, moving them from one column to the other until finally things looked like they made sense and he was making money. All in all, it was quite like a jigsaw puzzle.
When Rabastan came into the shop, Gilderoy had just finished making both columns of numbers even, and he determined it was a suitable stopping point. After all, they looked quite nice, all lined up together.
"Aah, Mr. Lestrange! So good of you to drop by today. I was just going over the books - making them look all nice and organized again. Julian isn't here today, though. I think he's up at the forge, if you're looking for him."
"I do hope Julian is well?" Rabastan removed a list from his cloak pocket. "Actually I am here to inquire whether you might not have time to undertake a large custom order for me for delivery before Christmas. It has turned remarkably colder and my Business Manager who volunteers at the orphanage tells me the children are really not dressed in adequate outwear for the weather."
He placed the list on the counter. "I realize Christmas is in less than three weeks. I understand if you do not feel that you would have time to produce everything on this list, however I would prefer to purchase as much as possible from you before I need to seek a source outside of town."
Rabastan looked about and noticed that the shop also sold yarn. He had not known that. "I would also like to purchase enough of your wool that the ladies my employee has organized to help will have enough to produce hats, scarves and mittens as well."
