RP: Slow Ride

Summary: Eleanor takes Ernie for his first car ride.

Henry-- the brat-- had left the keys to Eleanor’s old car with their father. It had taken her nearly ten minutes to convince him that they were only planning to drive in the car. She was glad that she had given herself a little time before hand to pick it up before she was supposed to meet Ernie at Sally’s pub. She was also very glad that Ernie hadn’t been around for that particular conversation.
By the time she made it to the pub she had half an hour to visit with Sally before Ernie was due to arrive. Sally was a middle-aged woman with a cloud of frizzy red hair (that Eleanor suspected wasn’t really her natural colour), and bright red lipstick. They had taken to each other almost immediately after Eleanor had started working for her. Eleanor suspected that she liked Sally so much because she reminded her a little of Rose. What it was about Eleanor that Sally had liked so much she had never really figured out. She thought it might have been that Sally had never had any children of her own. She certainly treated Eleanor like a surrogate daughter.
Sally had made Eleanor tell her all about ‘this fellow of hers’, not an easy task considering she couldn’t tell her anything about his job, or where he had gone to school. “Goodness, Eleanor, dontcha ever talk to the bloke?” Sally had asked with a wink.
When ten o’clock rolled around, Eleanor started keeping an eye on the front door for Ernie. When she saw him walk by one of the big windows at the front of the building, she jumped up from her stool near the bar, gave Sally a hug goodbye and hurried over to meet him before Sally could start questioning him herself.
