"Pass me the screwdriver," said Horace.

Retcon passed Horace the tool. With care he used his wand to transfigure a spot on the gate-post in front of his house. A small cylindrical plug of brick suddenly became a little softer, about the texture of putty. Horace held a sheet of metal against the post and pushed in a screw. A little of the soft brick squidged out, and he carefully wiped it off the metal, raised his wand again, and said "Finite Incantatem." The spell ended, the brick was back to its original hardness, clamped around the screw. He eyed it critically, and said "Does this look level to you?"

"Retcon thinks so."

"So does Stammy," said the garden elf.

"All right then," said Horace. "Next screw." He repeated the process for the diagonally opposite corner, then stepped back to take a look for himself. "Just right," he said smugly. The other two quickly followed. To be on the safe side he added a fixing charm that would be difficult to remove without his help, and an anti-vandalism ward. Neither spell would deter a determined assault, Horace had no illusions about his ability with charms, but they might at least stop casual pranks. He stood back from the pillar again and said "And there we are..."

"...open for business."

Retcon and Stammy clapped politely, and Horace said "Right, let's get back to work" and went inside.

"Professor Slughorn is a great wizard," said Retcon. "Does Stammy think many customers will come?"

"Buggered if Stammy knows."
