Ernie woke up with the sun. He knew it was silly to be excited by the fact he was going to ride in a real muggle car, but he couldn't help it. He poked around his flat, cleaning up a bit, read a few chapters of The Two Towers, looked through his record collection (he was sorry to discover that he had absolutely no country music), and even indulged in a lengthy fantasy involving he and Eleanor and the front seat of her car.

Finally, it was 9:55. He grabbed his wand, Apparated to the coordinates Eleanor had given him, and found himself in an alley. Stowing his wand in his pocket--where it would be accessible but not visible--he hurried to the front of the pub. He wondered if he was supposed to go in and meet Eleanor. Before he could decide, she was rushing out the door.

"Hello, Eleanor," he said, wanting to kiss her hello, but unsure of whether he should. He'd gotten carried away the last time he'd kissed her in public.

"Hello, Ernie," Eleanor told him, giving one last wave good-bye to Sally. She leaned in and gave him a peck on the cheek, since Ernie didn't seemed inclined to do so. Which was slightly worrisome, but probably for the best. She didn't seem to have much self control when it came to kissing Ernie, and it would be bad if Sally told her mother that she'd snogged him right against the window of the pub.

"Are you ready? The car is right there," she told him, pointing to the red one parked next to the pavement. "It's, uh, not terribly fancy for a car, i'm afraid. Would you like me to show you how it works?"

Ernie's eyes lit up when he spotted the car. "It's a car, Elle! It doesn't have to be fancy!" Merlin, he needed to calm down so he took a deep breath. He got closer to it and peeked in the window. The steering wheel was on the right side; he knew enough to get in on the left. The door was half-way open when he remembered his manners. Leaving his side, he hurried around to open Eleanor's door for her.

As soon as she was in, he raced around to the passenger side, climbed in, and shut the door.

"Let's go!"

Eleanor had to laugh at Ernie's enthusiasm. She waited until he was in the car before she stuck the key in the ignition and started it up. She showed him how to put on his seatbelt on, and then leaned over and switched on the radio. "You can find some different music if you'd like, it works just like the wireless. This knob works the dial, and this one adjusts the volume."

"Is there anywhere in particular you'd like to go?" she asked as she pulled out onto the road. "We can head for the motorway, you can drive faster there."

Eleanor frowned slightly. She didn't really like the thought of not really seeing Ernie for five days. Nor did she really like the idea of him working at night, especially if he wasn't filing, but she bit her tongue. She didn't reckon it was her place to say so.

"Just let me know if you're finished with it by your next day off, and we'll do it then," she said, reaching across the table to give his hand a squeeze.

When the meal was finished Eleanor smiled over at him. "So, what would you like to do next?"

Ernie shrugged. "Er...I dunno. I'm partial to the idea of just driving around and...talking...if that's alright with you." Although he wasn't opposed to more kissing either.

The waitress brought the check and he snatched it up before Eleanor could. Heading off any protests, he insisted that it was only fair that he pay since she was driving him around. He'd sold a few comic books in London for money.

Once he'd received his change and carefully calculated the proper tip, they left. On the way out, he took Eleanor's hand again and they walked back to the car. After she unlocked the door, he held it open for her.

Eleanor nodded. "Sounds good to me." She liked the idea of just talking with him.

She shook her head with a smile as he insisted on paying. She squeezed his hand before letting go to unlock the door. Before she started the car, she leaned over him and rummanged through the glove box. "Gum?" she asked, offering the pack to him after taking a stick for herself.

She pulled out onto the road, and headed off toward somewhere quieter than town. So they wouldn't have to make so many stops, she told herself.

Ernie squeezed his eyes shut when she leaned over him. Eleanor was right there, so close, but he was determined to be a gentleman. When she moved away, he opened his eyes again and took a stick of gum from the pack before returning it to the glove box.

"Any idea when you'll take your OWLs?" he asked, curious about how the new school was run. He glanced out the window every so often, wondering if they were getting back on the motorway or if they were going somewhere else.
