Ernie stepped outside of Auror Headquarters. There was a bite to the air, winter was definitely on its way. He shoved his hands in his coat pockets and wondered what to do now. His first few days of work had gone well. Even if he was only becoming familiar with the various report forms that the Aurors used. Idly, he wondered which form McLaggen had used to report the 'geese animagi'. This made him grin.

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught an owl flying toward him. The grin faded. He knew exactly from whom it was. The owl hovered in front of him. As soon as he removed the letter from its leg, it flew off. Of course, they didn't want a response.

Ernest,

We've recently heard some disturbing news. You've become an Auror? We don't know exactly what you're attempting to prove; are you trying to get yourself killed? Just because your brother was a fine Auror doesn't mean that you're cut out for the same work.

We've also heard that you've been staying with Hannah Abbott. Ernest, a nice girl like that has a reputation to think about. You're certainly putting her in awkward position by staying there unsupervised. If you have any feelings for Hannah at all, you must move out.

Mother and Father Macmillan

P.S. Tell Hannah we've said hello. She shouldn't be such a stranger.

Ernie crushed the letter in his fist and shoved it into his pocket. His first instinct was to go home and brood, draft response after response before chucking them all in the rubbish bin. He shook his head. Fuck them, he thought, heading for the Five Alarm.

The pub was fairly deserted when he arrived. He sat at a table in the back and when the server came over, he ordered a firewhisky. Upon hearing they didn't have any, he told them to bring whatever was equivalent. Pulling out what was left of his Muggle money, he told the server to keep them coming as well.
