I saw the film for the third time last night and the more I see it the more I wonder...

(Content behind the cut contains spoilers!)

If Sweeney hadn't discovered his wife's body what would have become of him and Mrs Lovett?
If he hadn't have discovered his wife's body he obviously wouldn't have killed Mrs Lovett because the only reason he did was ( Read more... )

I agree....I definitely think that when they were interrupted by Anthony he had been about to agree with her about them having a life together (my other half is in the process of writing a fic where Anthony timed that unfortunate apperance 'cause he wanted to ruin things between Todd and Lovett cause he fancied Todd!)

And yes, I think he would have killed himself or got caught, both have happened in other versions of the story I have encountered- also I agree with you that he knew Toby was there, he had damn quick reflexes and would have fought him if he had heard him which i think he had.

My pet theory is that Sweeney killing Lovett was an act of suicide because he knew that she was the only thing left that was worth him living for and he didn't feel he deserved it....there's more to the theory than that but i'm going to live it there to work into a fic for later!

Do let me know if you think i'm talking out of my arse or not! :-)

Anthony needed to learn not to run in shouting 'Mr Todd!' haha ( ... )

"Maybe not like I dreamed - maybe not like you remember" - aaargh! I seriously and genuinely used that line on my ex (ish)the other day!
I hate Anthony and wanted to smack him in his silly teeth at that point!
Sorry, that was mature wasn't it?!

That's what I thought - he'd either have nothing to life for because his life revolved around revenge or he'd try and live with Mrs Lovett for the rest of his life. If they did get together I imagine they'd leave London and the 'ghosts' there. Go somewhere quiet where no-one knew them like Mrs Lovett dreamed.

Haha yes Anthony needs lessons in good and bad timing! I think they were definitely having "a moment" before Anthony burst in ( ... )

You'd have thought Anthony would have learnt not to burst in!

I don't know if you read one of my comments above but I said I thought him thinking Lucy was dead would have been much easier :)
Like you said, he's Sweeney now and she's basically insane so neither are who they were prior.

He probably thinks aswell it's best if Johanna doesn't know him because of how the times have changed him and he's already missed out on so much. I think he isn't bothered as long as someone like Anthony is with her and not the judge!

It did make sense and I like lengthy comments! Discussions like this are always fun and interesting :)
I'd hoped I hadn't simply stated the obvious or blabbered myself. After seeing the film again though I couldn't stop thinking about certain scenes or even sentences!

Yeah I'm glad you started this discussion... they are v fun!

I totally agree with you. He probably doesn'y want Johana to see him now because he is so different to how he used to be. :( Aww this film is actually a tragedy.

*hugs Sweeney, Mrs Lovett and Toby tightly*

haha

I think he feels Johanna might make him more upset too, if she resembles Lucy.
I did feel sorry for Toby initially but I hate what he does right at the end!

The leg touching was indeed suggestive! He seems quite shy about it and maybe tries to play down the fact he is starting to warm to her initially. I think it starts showing a lot more, especially in his eyes, around 'A Little Priest' and 'By The Sea'. He hasn't exchanged affection for 15 years so it is going to be rather unusual for him ( ... )

And of course there's the infamous line of suggestion:

A seaside wedding could be devised,
Me rumpled bedding legitimized.

Dude. There's rumpled bedding TO legitimize! Hah!

I think that if he hadn't discovered that the old woman was Lucy, he might have killed himself. As others have suggested, his mission was complete. Especially if Mrs. Lovett hadn't been there ( ... )

She says they shouldn't try it until it's legal but they're doing things against the law anyway so what difference would sex outside marriage do?! Haha ( ... )

Oh, Anthony...The first thing I asked my friend when he appeared right at this moment was, 'When d'you think he's finally gonna die?' Aha! :D I was pissed! I really thought a true-to-heart romantic moment was gonna happen but nope. Still, that scene was enough to make me go 'AAAW!' and gave me hope that yes, it was possible for Sweeney to maybe move on after his vengeance is complete, instead of letting himself die to join Lucy like I thought he would - of course, I doubt he'll ever stop loving his wife (but do those who've lost a loved one like that ever do?), or fully become Benjamin Barker again since he's now a very scarred man, but I can easily see him let his feelings for Mrs. Lovett develop a bit more freely after that ( ... )

I've always thought Mrs Lovett decided it was much easier for him to think of her as being dead & keeping the fond memories of her than seeing her how she is now. With Lucy out of the equation she then feels something will happen between her and Sweeney once he gets his revenge and hopefully tries to move on ( ... )
