Just before he ran in Sweeney & Mrs Lovett seemed to move closer, they were making eye contact and it really did look like they were going to kiss. Like she said they might not have ended up how he remembered love or how she dreamed they would but they could at least have something together. They could use the money to move away from London & all the negative memories there. Plus Sweeney would have got his revenge. I think he was coming to terms with the fact he may never know his daughter and I think he would have been able to cope had he known she was definately free of the judge. Her being with Anthony was a lot better than her being the judge's property.
They're interesting fic ideas that both you and your other half have come up with!
If he hadn't have killed Lucy I highly doubt he could have gone back to how it used to be. False imprisonment had changed him, he was now a serial killer and she was mentally unwell after the break up of her family and the rape she experienced. Like Johanna said, the ghosts would never go away. It wouldn't have worked out and in a way Mrs Lovett did him a favour. Him believing she was dead was probably easier than having to deal with her in her ill beggar state. Mrs Lovett was more suited to the new him as she was equally as involved in his acts - she didn't kill but she helped dispose of the bodies in a gruesome way.
