I saw the film for the third time last night and the more I see it the more I wonder...

(Content behind the cut contains spoilers!)

If Sweeney hadn't discovered his wife's body what would have become of him and Mrs Lovett?
If he hadn't have discovered his wife's body he obviously wouldn't have killed Mrs Lovett because the only reason he did was ( Read more... )

I've always thought Mrs Lovett decided it was much easier for him to think of her as being dead & keeping the fond memories of her than seeing her how she is now. With Lucy out of the equation she then feels something will happen between her and Sweeney once he gets his revenge and hopefully tries to move on.

Part of me wonders where he wasn't as upset as he thought he would be when he found Lucy's body & felt he should be angry with her.
The method of killing her is indeed interesting. What someone else mentioned is interesting too, by killing her that way he doesn't have to look at her & no-one will find her corpse.

I think there is some serious sexual tension between the two during 'A Little Priest'! I don't think Sweeney would be so violent towards her either - in the 'By The Sea' scene he seems rather shy about it all. From the kiss to the leg grabbing. He hasn't been affectionate towards a woman for 15 years. I also imagine Lucy would have been very reserved when it came to sex, not really letting Sweeney see her naked and maybe only having sex when it came to consumating their marriage and when they wanted a child together. With Mrs Lovett on the other hand I can imagine them both having sex for pleasure and it being a bit more experimental and exciting.
It's during 'A Little Priest' that he really seems to warm to her, makes eye contact with her and of course there's this shot:
