I rant, and my friends rant. I even write really crazy poetry and yet, none of it seems to sink through. Okay, I take that back, I think there's some learning happening, just evidently not as much as there needs to be at this stage in the game ( Read more... )

linky thingies, discuss!, rant, whitefolk, open letter, hot mess, race, could this entry have any more tags?!, public

primate namesI read that as 'pirate names'.

Clearly, I'm insane.

I hadn't even heard the NAACP joke until you linked to it, but then again, it might be hard to hear from underneath my pile of homework/college apps.

I'm glad you've never heard it, and sad that others have.

Good luck on that school work lady!

I just watch the parts of the Sarah Silverman show that are funny, they're all in the commercials.

Oh, hell yes. I have yet to hear her say anything funny. She's just vile. Who else could make me feel sorry for Paris Hilton?

Ms. Stix, at what point do you think white people chiming in on this subject crosses the line from being supportive to pandering and suffering from white guilt? I always feel like I should just keep my mouth shut, although obviously not enough for me do it. Do you even want our support?

Of course! I yearn for white participation because ultimately it's going to be the actions of white people that decide the future of race relations in this country.

I always encourage debate and questioning because I know as a white person that whole subject of race is very touchy and extremely volatile, but I also need you as a white person to understand the luxury in being able to choose whether or not to be involved in race discussion and that many POC experience everyday what you can make the decision not to.

People think of white privilege as a curse, but it doesn't have to be that way. Instead of fearing it use it. When you see someone being willfully ignorant or racist, make the decision to educate them, or to level the playing field.

That's what these discussions are for. Not to yell at whitefolk (well, not just to yell at whitefolk, heh), but so that you all know what's going on inside and hopefully can find a spot to relate and make change ( ... )

I always try to keep this is mind. I liken it to sexism. Men may sympathize, but they'll never really understand how much it sucks to be hassled when you're walking down the street, or the constant feeling many women have of not being safe anywhere. Now, it might be a perfect comparison, but it's as close as I can get.

try to homogenize (I DO NOT SEE COLOR!! I DON'T!)

Oh, that's such bullshit. There's a huge difference between being appalled by racism and saying you don't notice someone's color. Someone's race might not matter to you, but don't be lying about how well your eyes work. (Obviously, that's the general you, not YOU, Sticky.)

Doesn't that bug the hell out of you?IT DOES! Hee! And it's something that's so simple and true but so ignored. When Don Imus went on his rant, or Michael Richards went on his a lot of people began to chastise the black community for our use of the word ( ... )
