The guard was swift, and Garnier frowned slightly when the man disappeared - hopefully it was only to write up what he had found out, or had he completely forgotten Garnier's orders? Well, there wasn't much he could do about it now. He looked Lavi over and his worries were confirmed. Pale, shaking, and slightly hunched from the pain of something - though he had the pinched look of one who hungered - there was clearly suffering here, and all because he refused to eat.

"You did not. Sit down, please." His tone was a bit colder than it had been the last time, but it was not noticeably cruel. He gestured to the chair before going back to his herb counter and mixing the final crushed herbs, finely powdered as they were, into the dark liquid in another bowl. When this much was finished, he would speak with the boy; and then he would give him his medicine in what was bound to be a much less pleasant way than eating.

"These?" Garnier's voice took on a slightly lighter tone as he thoroughly stirred the fine powders into the mix, watching them slowly vanish and stain the mixture with their own color. "Of course. Each one grows somewhere in this world and has been used as a medicine for hundreds of years. They are all entirely useful in their own ways - and always in making those involved feel better after a long period of illness." Of course, whether or not the herbs themselves caused pain as well was a fact he conveniently left out. Lavi would note upon that if he liked; the boy was known for high intelligence, if not common sense ( ... )

Garnier could hear the unease and discomfort in Lavi's voice, and listened to the various excuses, even reasons, for the drugs not to be administered. The boy spoke logic easily if not flawlessly; it was clear that he didn't want to suffer any ill effects, and that was likely the reason he had turned down most of his food (if, in fact, he had, though from his look and demeanor it seemed the likeliest route). But this would be for the best. Even the boy had to realize it eventually. Still, it was not his way to simply force fear on anyone, and once he had removed the air bubbles from the syringe (an action that was pointed out to him particularly often), he set it down next to the herbs and turned to face Lavi, hands clasped behind his back ( ... )

The boy would focus on such a topic, but he was right. There had been no instances, no fights, no strange rumors; he hadn't even been involved in the uprising from the night before. Garnier kept the frown from his face as he placed his hand flat on the file. He made no move toward Lavi to stop him, nor did he mention it, but if the boy tried to pull it away, he would find the task nearly impossible. The strength of an old man was often considered fragile, but this particular old man could still heft and wield a blade as surely as any warrior ( ... )

The boy was trying to anger him through words, but all he got for that was a faint, wry smile from Garnier. The doctor picked up Lavi's file and put it away in his desk, no longer particularly needing it. Intelligent, yes; however, while his logic was certainly poignant, he was missing clear and obvious problems that could arise otherwise ( ... )
