Steampunk Halloween Costume

Hey, I am working on a Halloween costume that is Steampunk. I'm sewing it myself. I am working off of the Simplicity 2172 pattern and am currently working on the skirt. I have the jacket done. I used a different pattern for the corset as I did not like the look of the bustier and I can make a properly boned corset anyway. My dilemma her is the ( Read more... )

The jacket is lovely!!

I was just last night doing some historical costume research and the jacket looks similar to what was called a 'redingnote' (riding coat). Maybe you could pull from those types of ensembles and wear a fichu around the neck or something similar - maybe even like a riding cravat?

Here are some examples - although these are historical not steampunk, this might give you some ideas and would be inexpensive, since it is really only a strip of organaza or super light weight fabric available anywhere :)

I also have the same pattern but I'm hoarding it until I decide what to do with it!

I've seen people "fill in" the top of this jacket with various things (it's a popular pattern and came out earlier than most other steampunk patterns from the big 3). So just a couple of ideas you could bounce around:

1. Jabot. Put any shirt under the jacket and add a lace or ruffled jabot. One might even go this far:

2. Man's-style wing collar shirt and a narrow necktie or ascot.

3. Chemise-type shirt gathered at the neckline worn with steampunk jewelry or collar:
