Looking for a capelet pattern

Oct 19, 2012 13:15

I have been asked to modify a leather greatcoat into a highwayman style coat. You know the type, with the shoulder cape.
Basically, I need a pattern for just the cape, as the coat is already there.
Anyone know of any free ones? Or can give me some advice on how to draft one?

I've had really good luck finding medieval and renaissance cape and cloak patterns with Google searches:

I've put capelets on cloaks a few times. To draft one, measure the neck, and also measure (usually done at center back) the length you want from neck to hem. The circle you will make will need a radius of the measurement of neck to hem, plus the radius of the neck measurement, plus a couple inches for seam and hem. Lay your fabric, and scribe two circles on it: one for the neck, at the center, and the larger one around it. Cut out the circle, and the smaller circle, and cut a straight line into the center for the front opening. If you are piecing the capelet, you can sew it halfway first, and then not have to cut the front opening.

I have made a Victorian coat with the capelet. I made a thin fabric one to test the pattern and then altered the pattern to make a more Jack the Ripper style wool coat.

The pattern I used is here:

The post I did about the first Coat I made is here:

I cannot find the post I did about the more elaborate wool coat. It should be somewhere in the Steampunk Fashion archive.

I hope this helps.

Depending on your experience it could be much easier and save a ton of time searching if you just put the coat on a dress form (or friend if you have to) and draped it. I have no idea what your experience is and I mean no insult if I am stating what you know to be obvious. Use $0.80 a yard muslin to drape with and sew your first draft and fit so you don't risk damaging the considerably more expensive leather. Construction should be very simple as there are not many seam types you can use in leather especially since there is little need to line it as it will not be touching anything but the existing coat. You should be able to get away with two front pieces (left and right mirrored) and two back panels with a seam down the middle. You should be able to get all of those pieces from one side of leather. Good luck.
