This is the general style I had in mind, perhaps a bit longer. I'm just a sucker for that whole flippy-bang thing.

Synthetic wigs can be extremely itchy if you have sensitive skin. I can't stand them for more than 5 minutes at a time.

Human hair wigs are the best, and prices vary according to quality, length and ethnicity. Chinese and Korean hair are the most affordable, Indian hair is mid range, and European hair is the highest. Unprocessed, hand tied European hair can easily cost 2 to 3 thousand dollars!

My advice would be to find some pictures of hairstyles you want, and then go from there. Many wig sellers will cut the wig for you if you can show them the style. Post the pics and I'll see what I can find for you.

Many hair salons will also cut a wig for you if you come in with it.

I'm thinking of something like this, except perhaps a bit longer in the back. Something on the rakish side, since it's pretty much impossible for me to be prim and proper, whether male or female.

I have a wig I use for costume that was about $40 (for shoulder-length female) and is just fine for that; I got it from a beauty supply shop. That's the best place to go for realistic, non-costume wigs, though they won't have odd colors. They were actually very helpful in finding me a shade of "blond" that works with a skintone that really wants platinum or dark brown-black only when I was trying NOT to look like a stripper. I ended up with something that's sort of a mix of brown and blond as if it had highlights, but it looks pretty realistic on, enough that people didn't realize who I was the first time they saw me in costume, and it made me suddenly look way more like my little cousin who has similar hair! I could seriously wear it out on the street, no problem ( ... )

A friend of mine, Catherine, owns God Save the Queen Fashions (http://gstqfashions.com/) and is a costumer by trade. She's had quite a few customers who've been female that have gotten male character costumes made and males who've gotten female characters. She's easy to talk, so check out the site and shoot her an email - I'm sure she'd be happy to help you! :D
