Hoy~

I'm a long time watcher, once in a while commenter, and finally joined the community properly in hopes of advice.

I have been wanting to learn to sew for a while now.  I have basic knowledge and am able to hem simple items, add lace, repair buttons, and whatnot.  However I want to learn to use patterns.  The first project that I wanted to try ( Read more... )

You might be able to use this tutorial. I've made several cravats before, and it looks good to me.

Or, just cut a long strip of fabric about 10" (25cm) by 50"-55" (130cm-140cm) on the bias. Fold it in half lengthwise (right sides together) and sew most of the way around the edges. Turn it right-side out, sew up the last little edge part, and press.

I intend to do a proper tutorial at some point and post it here, perhaps once I'm through exams.

Ooh, thank you so much! Should you ever manage to find the time to create a tutorial of your own, I would be very happy to make use of it. :)

They are easier than you think to make. Basically it is a long piece of fabric with triangular ends on both sides. The center part is folded three times and stitched down to hold the shape from the front of the neck, around the back to the other side of the front. See this photo for what I mean: http://s7.thisnext.com/media/largest_dimension/DB91088E.jpg

I made my own pattern and based it off the width of a normal neck tie.

I see.... Thank you for the response. I hope to try to get started on the project the following week, so that it should be done in time for Christmas.

The easiest thing to make is actually a skirt. The simplest form is the circle skirt, which is exactly what it sounds like; you can find tutorials on the internet explaining how to sort out the waist. But elastic-waist or gored skirts are also quite simple.
