A question of aging

I have recently completed my latest project, a pair of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink style patchwork bloomers.
However, upon their completion I noticed that they failed to match anything I had. Why? They look too new.

I have had some success in the past with tea-dying fabric and clothing, but that only works on natural fibers. These bloomers ( Read more... )

The first place I tend to recomend to people is Studio Creations. You might find some good tips there:

Ooo. Good link, in particular for peeling paint. I would add to the bleaching page. The author expresses concern over the puissance of bleach. Use a spray bottle of the diluted bleach, the same one you have in the kitchen for sponges &c., and turn the sprayer to extra fine mist. Squirt lightly and walk away for 5 min and then come back to check. Use about 1 part household bleach or less, to 5 parts water.
The resultant paled-out color (s) may be unexpected, especially if the original was black.

Mad scientist meant to say. Haven't tried this yet, but peroxide is kinder to organic materials of animal origin (e.g. silk, wool) than bleach. Reaction can be stopped by Campden solution of sodium metabisulfite, familiar from winemaking ventures.

You can use them as a kitchen towel for a month or so. No, really. Works like a charm. They'll get lots of wear and tear, especially if you wash them on hot, which will help fade the fabric.

I find dry brushing or lightly sponging acrylic paint does the trick very well.

With natural fabrics, I like to do tea dyeing and/or fraying of edges.
