Steampunky Movies

This is a little off-topic but I just saw The Wolfman yesterday and it was pretty good. That, along with Sherlock Holmes, had some excellent steampunky moments.  Sherlock, I thought, was genius.  The Wolfman was a good movie, visually amazing, with a fairly strong storyline. There were a few things I didn't get by the time it was done - random ( Read more... )

I adored the costumes, sets, and atmosphere of The Wolfman - lovely, lovely Victorian stuff. The storyline was pretty good and Benicio and Hugo Weaving were fantastic in their roles. HOWEVER - I was very put off by the "classic" Wolfman character design. With the rest of the movie so dark and gritty, I was hoping for a truly disturbing and inhuman look, kind of like the vampires in "30 Days of Night." As it was, the climactic battle between the 2 Wolfmen (no spoilers here!) was almost laughable. Since the "transformed" scenes are such a big part of the movie, I came away wanting to like it more but not really able to.

But I digress. My minimal complaints have nothing to do with steampunk... just speaking from a general movie-viewing perspective. I have not seen "Holmes" yet, but plan to as soon as it is released for the home library. :)

I agree with everything you say... I felt the same way. I was surprised by his look as well. And thankful they kept that fight scene shorter.

Enjoy Holmes!! I sure did.

I enjoyed The Wolfman, but I thought it was like a Hammer film with a bigger budget.

I LOVED everything about Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock most definitely rocked. I liked the cast of the Wolfman. I think did fabulous with what they were given... and I'll probably still buy it just b/c of them and the costume goodness.

I agree--Sherlock was excellent, The Wolfman was okay. Both had lots of top hats and several actors I find sexy, so hurrah. The only thing I found disappointing about The Wolfman was the darkness of the movie, which made the costume details difficult to see.

I wonder if their costuming will find it's way to an oscar nomination? I thought it was pretty authentic.

My favorite part of Wolfman was probably Emily Blunt.
I think my favorite steamy movie is Franklyn.

I'll have to look up Franklyn. And yes, I love Emily Blunt. She's a great actress. One of my favorite steamy movies is now Sherlock Holmes. :) Though Wild Wild West is still in the top 10...

Ooo yes! Franklyn was wonderful. The costumes and the story. I really liked that it made you think a bit at the end (definitely watched it again to look for little clues).
