Stephen had clearly had another sleepless night. There were purple shadows under his eyes and his movements were slow and clumsy.

“Bad dreams?” asked Leek, coming close and running a hand across Stephen’s shoulder. He felt a rush of triumph as Stephen leaned briefly into the touch. “It’s alright,” said Leek, “I understand.”

Stephen’s gaze flickered, his expression caught between bitterness and despair. “Do you?”

Leek kept his voice soft and even. “Not really. But I’m here for you. Come to bed.” He drew the heavy curtains, blanketing the room in comforting darkness. “Sleep. I’ll be right by your side.”
