Marriage should feel like the beginning but for Emily it felt like an ending. What did she know about Henry other than he was rich and could make polite conversation?
Her mother said that all brides felt this way and she must learn to trust Henry and rely on his judgement. She would please him and in return he would be kind to her. She would be happy.
“As you are, mother?” asked Emily. Her dress, embroidered with hundreds of seed pearls, lay heavy on her shoulders.
“I’ve done my duty,” said her mother, which was no answer at all.
