My dress turned out to be a bit of a disaster, so I scrapped it. I made a boo boo while cutting the circle skirt using the good fabric. I was only supposed to have two pieces, yet I ended up with three. I tried to save the skirt by stitching three panels together, but it resulted in the skirt being too small in the waist

My (as usual, unasked for) advice is to start off with something easy and learn the basics. You didn't learn to play the violin by starting out with Mendelssohn's Concerto, right?
Everything has a learning curve, no matter your natural talents and intelligence. At the very least, you'll avoid heartbreak and disappointment and wasted time, effort, energy and costly fabric and supplies, and at the most, you might have something cool to wear that no one else will have.
But once again, that's just my .02, what you do is up to you. Just remember, you have to learn to walk before you can run.
Or as someone in a pottery class I took many years ago said, "I like to learn the rules so I can break 'em!"
Love the picture of the bun!

You're right though, learning the basics is a god thing. With the apron and the tabs, I learned how to hem. With the dress, I learned how to do darts.

I'm going to try the pattern again at some point, and try it with cotton fabric the next time around.

Once I saw it, I knew I had to have it. I really hope it works out.

At least I learned how to sew darts, how to hem (had to hem the apron and the tails on the mockup), how to follow a pattern layout and directions, etc.
Hopfully this project turns out better.

I have half of the pattern pieces cut and marked and need to do the other half. I should start sewing Monday or Tuesday. It's just the mockup so it shouldn't be that bad.
