Today I took the two trains and the bus back to the stupid Immigration Bureau to pick up my new visa (and pay $100, ouch). I hate that place. It takes forever to get to and it's full of baka gaijin

I say go for permanent residency as long as it doesn't take too long to get.
I have UK permanent residency which is nice. It means I can actually leave the country for longer than two seconds and I don't have to explain WHY I'm coming back into the country.
I have a friend who has permanent residency, but he didn't get it until having lived in Japan for like 10 years and was married for a few years at that point too. The process looks pretty complicated. I can LJ-introduce you if you think it'd be useful to ask someone who's actually gone through it...
